How Cycling & mountain biking holidays in Sardinia makes a difference

Environment

As guides, we set an example, trying our best to leave the smallest footprint as possible, ensuring we give a thorough welcome briefing to educate our customers about our local protected areas. Our vision is to organise holidays which will inspire you and provide memories that will last a lifetime. The slow pace of a cycling holiday will be an experience from which you can forge a deep connection with the region and with the people you meet on your journey, limiting at the same time your impact on the environment.

Travellers on our Sardinia holidays are provided with our Travellers Codes that encourage the reduction of water usage, systems for collecting, recycling or safe disposal of litter and relevant suggestions to minimise damage to the environment, wildlife and marine ecosystems. By explaining about water shortage on the island, we encourage clients to be thoughtful about its use during showers; explaining to people the length of time for certain foods to decompose (egg shells, banana skins, orange peel) or the damage to wildlife. We encourage people not to dispose of waste in the environment but to use our very good recycling system that most accommodation providers conform to. Sardinia has a very good differentiated garbage collecting system. We explain the cycle of changing and washing towels daily, the energy and water consumption in this commodity, allowing clients to decide whether to keep the same towels or change them daily

We also :
- Limit printing on paper and recycle as much as possible.
- Avoid buying over-packed products.
- Buy fresh local products, always aware of travel miles.
- Use re-usable picnic sets
- Try to reduce water, energy and fuel consumption wherever possible
- Use bio-degradable products as much as possible.

From a local perspective, we have a partnership with Sustrans, a leading UK sustainable transport charity, where we do a variety of things including providing them with holidays to use in fundraising activities. We also provide them with 0.5p for every mile one of our customers cycles on the National Cycle Network - 12,000 miles of signed cycling and walking routes covering the length and breadth of the UK. We also allow our customers the opportunity to donate to Sustrans.

Community

Global adventures start with a local perspective – that's our philosophy. Whether abroad, or just as importantly at home, the start point is the same; how to create a sense of well-being and enjoyment in the holiday, while benefiting the local people, economy and respecting the environment.

We keep our group sizes small to minimise impact on smaller communities, and our friendly and easy going approach ensures a good personal relationship with every member of the group, combined with being able to participate and connect with the local culture, allowing us to provide a richer holiday experience.

From an economical perspective our policies are:
- Work with local people with fair wages.
- Buy locally in small family run shops.
- Select family run accommodation, farm stays “agriturismi” with their own responsible policies, including certified organic labelling etc.
- Never negotiate local prices.

The story of the provider of Cycling & mountain biking holidays in Sardinia

Having stayed in touch since primary school, Andy and Paul decided to cycle around South America in 1994. Andy was a keen cyclist but Paul hadn’t been on a bike since doing his paper round. They didn’t have an itinerary and used military maps to navigate through the desert. They had so much fun and met such amazing people that they agreed to set up a cycling tour company together. Andy says their trips create a flexible and intimate way to travel and absorb the local culture and, whats more, you never forget how to cycle – it’s just like riding a bike!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

All of it except the weather. Being with a like minded group / the trails / the scenery / the food / the organisation where nothing was too much trouble.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for inclement weather. Try and ride your MTB on several consecutive days before you go.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes. Cycling has very few environmental negatives. It was equally beneficial for us, to meet and see how the local people live and their culture.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

For me it was the first time for such a holiday and I would definitely go back and do it again. It was very enjoyable. The only negative was after a day of heavy rain, getting clothes dry was not catered for, and putting wet clothes on the following day (especially when it is cold) is not to much fun. Whether I would go again in April I am not too sure??
