Volunteer travel - what's it all about?
Are you looking for an adventurous trip with a purpose, or on a gap year or career break? If you want to make a difference in some of the world’s most important conservation areas - and in community projects - then volunteer trips are for you! Volunteers tend to have a sense of adventure, and come from a range of different backgrounds and from all over the world.
Edward Abbey said 'sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul'.

How this holiday makes a difference

This area is a global hotspot of diversity with over 1500 species of tropical plants and 300 species of bird, as well as a variety of exotic animals including the endangered spectacled bear.

What’s more, because you’ll be working with the Rainforest Concern, you’ll also receive a wealth of other benefits including:
- Membership of Rainforest Concern; ‘Protector’ status for those staying up to seven weeks; ‘Guardian’ membership for those who stay more than seven weeks.
- Each volunteer sponsors five acres of rainforest during their first two weeks of their stay.
- Each volunteer sponsors an additional acre of rainforest for each week they stay thereafter.

Each volunteer also receives:
- certificate to confirm their membership status and the number of acres they have sponsored in the Choco-Andean Rainforest Corridor.
- Rainforest Concern T-shirt.
- Thank you letter and other introductions.
- Latest and subsequent editions of our Rainforest Review magazine plus regular updates from the projects.

Santa Lucia was first formed as an agricultural cooperative and quickly learnt the value of conservation and sustainable management of its natural resources. This project presents a fantastic opportunity for you to play a role in its future.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The most memorable part of the holiday was my time at the Santa Lucia ecolodge. When, after climbing 600meters up a trail to the Santa Lucia lodge for the first time I finally reached the top and was hit with panoramic views across the Andes. A totally amazing view. The sunrises and sunsets were out of this world and the people were more friendly and welcoming than I ever expected.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

If you are new to Ecuador and not an experienced, confident traveller then booking through this operator is a good way to visit.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Santa Lucia is a community project which is run by locals. All of the money that they make is re-invested in maintaining the cloud forest reserve. The ecolodge has been designed to be very environmentally friendly with no mains electricity. The lodge is candle lit in the evenings and often shrouded in cloud giving a romantic/fairy tale feel.

4. Any other comments?

I had an amazing time, far better than I ever expected. The trip has changed the way I look at holidays and the way that I view my life's priorities. Thank you to responsible travel for helping me to find this trip!

Day tour/Attraction Reviews

We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
