How Community project in Sri Lanka makes a difference
Environment
This project has been set up to restore the beaches along Sri Lanka's western and southern coast, following the devastation caused by the Asian tsunami on December 26th 2004. It's now developed into a longer term project focusing on conserving the turtles of Sri Lanka and educating the local population. Turtle eggs are protected at this project and hatchlings released to ensure as many as possible can survive.
Community
The local community of Kosgoda were badly hit by the tsunami and this project has worked to help them rebuild their homes, families and opportunities. Working with the local community volunteers assist in education, particularly English teaching for adults and children. They also help with womens craft inititatives to give them an income of their own. Through the long-term commitment at this project there has been a gradual improvement in outlook and skills for the community.
