Thailand holiday & volunteer project

Volunteer travel - what's it all about?
Are you looking for an adventurous trip with a purpose, or on a gap year or career break? If you want to make a difference in some of the world’s most important conservation areas - and in community projects - then volunteer trips are for you! Volunteers tend to have a sense of adventure, and come from a range of different backgrounds and from all over the world.
Edward Abbey said 'sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul'.

How this holiday makes a difference

We try to ensure that all our trips not only minimise the negative effects of tourism but actually have a positive impact on the communities who welcome us into their villages and often their homes. Using local guides, local transport and local accommodation and paying fair wages, ensures that not only do our clients gain a unique insight into the culture they are visiting but also that as much of their money as possible stays in the local community.

Khao Lak was one of the areas worst hit by the tsunami in Thailand and as you drive along what was once a thriving beach road it still shows. Whilst in Phuket and other areas in the south, it’s hard to remember that the tsunami ever happened, here in the north, progress is still slow as there is simply so much to rebuild. And with many of the larger aid agencies now pulling out of the area the locals still need all the help they can get.

On this trip, you'll also be visiting the fascinating jungles and lakes of Khao Soke National Park which, although well inland from the tsunami affected regions, has also suffered greatly from the reduction in visitors to the southern area over the last few months. By joining this unique trip, you will not only be providing practical help through volunteering but also financial support to local businesses as well as (and arguably most importantly) showing the local people that they are not forgotten.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

I loved riding the elephant and there was a lot of opportunity to do that.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I feel that I helped the locals by being in there and I think they enjoyed having me. They made me feel very welcome.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I thought that it was one of the best things that I have done. The accommodation, the experience and the people were all great.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The most exciting part of the trip was probably the stay in the National Park. The Riverside Cottages at Khao Sok were wonderful and the activities we could do there were great: elephant safari, jungle trek and tubing down the river was awesome.

The most memorable part of the trip was the Tsunami volunteer work, particularly meeting the people of Ban Talae Nok, the women's soap collective and playing with the children. The homestay was memorable also, both for good and not so good reasons! (outside loo being the downside in a blowing gale in the middle of the night).

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Other tips to travelers: do you really need stuff like hair straighteners, and other beauty gadgets (as some of our group did) it's just not that sort of trip. The toilets are very different and basic from European toilets and this can be a bit of a shock, particularly for women. Take tissues and wipes with you.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes the trip did appear to benefit local people - a) spending money and not haggling too much, b) volunteer work, although this was a small drip of a contribution. It raised my awareness of things and hopefully fundraising back in the UK will be an ongoing source of support. Minimum impact on the environment I think.

4. Any other comments?

Many thanks - I will certainly look at 'Responsible Travel' when I go on another trip.
