How this holiday makes a difference

This family holiday has two bases – at Umag in Istria in Northern Croatia and Tolmin in Western Slovenia.

In Istria our local partners are firmly dedicated to promoting the twin concepts of utilising local suppliers and providers and following practices which contribute towards the environmental protection of the area. They actively promote the idea of tourism with minimal pollution and to this end ensure that groups bring back any garbage which may have a detrimental impact on the environment, which is then recycled when and wherever possible.

Dedication to the stimulation of the local economy extends to promoting employment opportunities where possible and this happens in terms of guiding, local restaurants and local accommodation providers. For activities local guides are exclusively used for all land and sea based activities and road transfers are organised locally as well.

In Slovenia we actively encourage the development of the training of local guides who receive their diplomas from the University of Ljubljana. Our presence allows these guides to develop their international language skills through constant interaction with our groups.

Tolmin itself lies on the edge of the Triglav National Park and taking clients there on one activity day we educate them in how tourism can impact on the ecology of the region if not managed carefully. Again only local accommodation providers are used who employ local staff in all disciplines. All food served to clients is locally grown and prepared and we encourage clients to sample local delicacies.

The time in Slovenia was great. I was not as impressed with Croatia. In particular the activities while fun were not as exciting, The scuba diving was positively dangerous and I would strongly recommend that you do not use that school again. In detail it was clear that they did not give people enough time to get used to the apparatus, did not ask about health etc. The hotel in Croatia was O.K. but it does say 3 star on the wall where you have it as 4 star in the brochure. The wine list is extortionate (I appreciate a common habit but it is annoying). Overall I did not feel as safe in the Croatian part of the activities as in the Slovenian.

The most memorable part of the holiday was the canyoning and the white water rafting. We will definitely return to Slovenia and I will recommend you to others.

Read the operator's response here:

We had mixed reports about the scuba diving element of this holiday during 2006 and as a result I flew out to Croatia to discuss their procedures. Despite the Scuba company’s protestations that they were doing everything as laid down by ourselves, I was not wholly convinced. As a result, we will not be working with this company again.

Safety on our holidays is of paramount importance. As a Director of the company, I have to sleep at night, and although I don’t think the scuba company endangered anybody, I felt that they lacked the human resources to make the activity as enjoyable as it should be. Consequently, we are no longer offering Scuba Diving as an option on this holiday.

Regarding the hotel in Croatia. It is a 4-star hotel but we have decided to change the location of the first week to the prettier fishing village of Novigrad. We now offer a choice of two 3-star hotels with much better facilities for Family holidays.

Overall, this holiday has always been a resounding success but we welcome feedback from our clients as it allows us to continually improve our product. In this case I believe we have moved swiftly to rectify any shortcomings.
