Volunteer travel - what's it all about?
Are you looking for an adventurous trip with a purpose, or on a gap year or career break? If you want to make a difference in some of the world’s most important conservation areas - and in community projects - then volunteer trips are for you! Volunteers tend to have a sense of adventure, and come from a range of different backgrounds and from all over the world.
Edward Abbey said 'sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul'.

How this holiday makes a difference

Our centre has had the following successful releases; 6 Troops of vervet monkeys totalling 195 animals. 5 common duikers, 4 Bushbuck, 2 Marsh-mongooses, 3 Banded mongooses, 2 Dwarf mongooses, 2 Bush babies, 3 Tree squirrels, 2 caracals, 2 porcupines, 2 Warthogs, 20 different owls, 1 White-backed vulture, 2 Snake eagles, 1 Steppe buzzard, 1 Thick knee (previously called Spotted Dikkop), Hedgehogs and Tortoises.

We have massive rehabilitation enclosures measuring more than 6 Ha and presently house more than 600 monkeys and other wildlife species. This makes the centre the biggest primate rehabilitation centre in South Africa. However, it is also the biggest vervet monkey rehabilitation centre in the world; the only privately owned centre not receiving Corporate or Government funding!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Too many to choose just one! Bottle feeding baby monkeys, Kruger park, bush camp, elephant rides.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

If it's winter bring warm clothes for the evening as its freezing! A few hoodies would be a good -one for the monkeys and one for the evening. Bring binoculars for Kruger - you have to go.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I feel it benefited the monkeys lives hugely. It was amazing to see some of them being released. Many of them wouldn't survive without this place.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent! Two weeks wasn't enough thought!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Our whole experience was definitely an unforgettable one. However we most enjoyed being able to interact with the baby baboons and baby vervets and getting to know their individual personalities. We are also very glad to say that we took part in constructing a new bigger baboon enclosure by erecting the fences etc, as this is something which the primates will really benefit!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

To take clothes that you do not mind getting ruined, as you do get extremely dirty.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

The centre is doing a great job for primates all over South Africa in giving them the best opportunity possible to have a good life!

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This holiday was an eyeopening experience and as well as contributing to it you gain so much back from it. We would all definitely go back again, the people that work there are brilliant and eager to teach you about the primates!
