Travelling with a local operator

This holiday is operated by a company based in the holiday destination and they will be able to provide expert local knowledge. They will be able to tailor make your holiday to suit your requirements not only concerning the dates of travel but also typically the standard of accommodation, and thus price. It is rare for local operators to be able to help with the booking of your flights.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Activity holiday in Nepal

Environment

We are a Nepali company and travel through this company makes a direct impact in the economy of Nepal. We also try to maximise our contribution to the local economy by hiring local guides and porters for these trips and staying in smaller lodges to spread the income.

The company does not vertically integrate and sub-contracts all support activities like transportation, lodging etc. so that the money gets spread in the economy. It conserves on paper minimising paperwork in the office and by giving out electronic brochures. When required, brochures are printed on both sides of the paper and are in a folder format so that only relevant inserts need be given.

In the field, guides, porters and clients are all oriented in responsible travel. A zero litter policy is in place so that it minimises wastage in the region. We also only take out very small groups with a maximum of twelve participants per group. All trips also focus on culture.

Community

We have put in place a development support system whereby 10% of its profits go to charities like the Joy Foundation Nepal who conduct free cataract eye camps in rural areas of Nepal and Antardristi Nepal, which is developing a fund to start a incest and rape care centre for minors. 10% of the company's profits also goes directly into employee benefits.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Trekking in the mountains, the bridge swing at last resort. Elephant bath time at Chitwan. The chilled out atmosphere in Pokhara. The people I met along the way.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take your own light weight sleeping bag for the mountain lodges. plus a pair of sandals for the mountain lodges in the evening. Waterproofs were not essential, as the monsoon rains fall only in the evening.
Take very light weight cool clothing.
Take a book and pack of cards. At this time of year, you are likely to be the only guest in the mountain lodges, so make sure you have enough to keep yourself entertained.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, locals benefited to some extent, but I think the agents and the owners of large hotels benefited more. Tourism is rapidly changing the landscape of the mountain trails, most of the villages we visited were just a collection of tourist lodges, and everywhere we visited had building work going on.
However, I was very happy and the holiday was exactly what I expected.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

9/10

Yes.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

I think probably all of it! Each bit was so different from the others it is difficult to. The scenery is breathtaking, the people wonderful and the rafting was so good. Chitwan was a totally different world and we felt very pampered and spoilt.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Don't take too much luggage. Make sure you have enough warm clothes for the trek but you don't need lots of changes. It is also very important to keep the weight down for the porters.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

From what we saw, any income going into the country is good for the people. Most of our accommodation was pretty eco friendly.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

An amazing experience. Not for the faint hearted but well worth the effort you have to put into it. The operator and their associates were very good and we felt very safe in their hands. They are highly responsible as far as eco travel is concerned and I would recommend them to anybody.

On behalf of my wife, Rosemarie and myself, I wish to express my thanks for the way in which you handled our booking. From our arrival in Kathmandu on 30th March to our departure on 17th April everything went according to plan.

Our special thanks to Prerna who handled my initial enquiry and who then went on to arrange our total itinerary. Basically my demands were for white water rafting and a ten day trek. Time available was in excess of time required to fulfil my requests so she perfectly used that time by arranging a sightseeing tour of Kathmandu on the first clear day and a fantastic “hotel with a view “ (Club Himalaya) on the penultimate day. Also special thanks to Raj who met us on the first morning at the Manislu Hotel and who put life into our existing paper schedule. He answered all of our questions and gave excellent advice. I cannot quote a single highlight of that holiday – it was one long highlight.

Having spent the previous three months in India, Nepal proved to be a breath of fresh air in more ways than one! White water rafting was all that we had hoped and expected it to be. The attention to detail and safety could not be faulted.

What can I say about the trek? Two people (my wife and I) supported so ably by a team of eleven including guides cooks and porters. Before finalising my booking with you I stated that I had a medical condition that required the exclusion of wheat and all wheat products. The whole team understood that and almost stood guard over all of my food. The cook managed to provide “normal” meals for my wife whilst keeping mine completely wheat free. Our guide showed great concern for my wife and insisted upon carrying her daypack, both the guide and his assistant were always on hand at any slightly difficult crossing, my wife really appreciated that concern. Our support team was depleted by three at a police and military check post when it was found that papers were not fully in order but that loss of manpower made absolutely no difference to us, the remaining members of the team just redistributed the load an carried on smiling as before.

A really nice touch came at the very end when we were invited out to dinner by Raj and Prerna and met two young ladies who had just flown in from England and were about to embark on a trek. I trust that they will have enjoyed their trek as much as we enjoyed our entire stay.

I will not hesitate to recommend your services to any whom I might meet that are considering a holiday in Nepal or Tibet.
