Alaska holiday

Small group adventure holiday
Typically you will be sharing your experiences with between 4-20 like minded travellers (depending on the trip, operator and how many others are booked on the trip) and you'll have a group leader with you. Whether you are travelling alone or with friends its good value, and a great way to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of privacy. This trip will appeal to travellers of all ages who enjoy meeting new people as well as seeing new places.

How this holiday makes a difference

We use low-impact 12-seater minibuses for our tours in the US, greatly reducing the emissions that would be caused if 12 people took a fly/drive holiday, still a common option in this sprawling country. This mode of transport also enables us to reach more remote spots not accessible to larger vehicles. On most nights we camp – a lower impact option than staying in hotels – and make a point of adhering to the strict guidelines laid down by the environmental authorities here. We recommend that travellers bring biodegradable soap to minimise their own impact too. We are also careful to avoid disrupting the wildlife we come into contact with, and for this reason limit our group size to just 12 persons. In the National Parks we will see at first hand how responsible tourism can be a force for good as it provides a valuable contribution to wildlife and environmental conservation and education. It also supports many local businesses, and as we purchase camp provisions locally and stay in locally run hotels we are supporting many a small community.

As well as the above, we support a variety of charities and projects worldwide which support vulnerable communities and habitats including Friends of Conservation, Hope Worldwide and Send A Cow. We are also actively engaged with UK travel industry bodies which promote best practice in responsible tourism, such as Tourism Concern, The Travel Foundation and AITO. Our commitment to responsible tourism is not limited to our overseas operation and we have measures to ensure our UK office operates according to our responsible tourism policy. Carbon offsets for all flights booked with us are included in the tour cost.

Story of the thingstodo provider

This small group operator is just celebrating its 30th year and was originally set up to enrich people’s lives through adventure travel. The directors have roots in overland trucking and are determined to keep a pioneering spirit alive. They believe what sets them apart is the strong relationships they’ve developed with local suppliers and tour guides over the years. A tour leader who thinks creatively can turn a good experience into a fantastic one and open up a place so that travellers gain insight into a completely different way of life. They operate in many different countries and try to avoid a blanket approach – their aim is to get customers involved in the projects they visit and to forge lifelong friendships.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The most memorable part was the flight from McCarthy - very much weather dependent and I was lucky. However there were a diverse set of experiences, with the glacier boat trip well worth doing.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for the weather - I went in July and it was both wet and cold. When you are camping this starts to become an issue. There are lots of optional extras and it is important to think through what you want/can afford to do. Also, this is not a walking holiday but more a tour with a considerable amount of bus travel which makes the stated itinerary a little unrealistic in places.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

The trip certainly used a good number of small local businesses - in contrast to the big cruise-ship parties. Difficult to judge the environmental impact given the air travel to get there against a mainly camping tour. Also provides Alaska with alternatives to raw material exploitation.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A well-balanced itinerary which took us to a large number of Alaskan highlights. However distances are deceptively large so there is a lot of minibus travel. Alaska truly is mainly wilderness with relatively little sign of human impact - vast mountains, glaciers and forests are spectacular even in the rain! The final few days at the wilderness lodge are a great way to unwind - it makes quite a shock making it back to London. Overall a very good two weeks.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Sea-kayaking round icebergs calving off a glacier, while a seal watched and a bald eagle soared overhead

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The glacier hike in Wrangell St Elias is so good you can opt for the cheaper flight-seeing option at Denali, and not go for the glacier landing

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes. We stayed in small hotels, used local shops etc

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent. It was everything I had hoped for. Didn't want to come home!
