Luxury holiday in Vietnam

Travelling with a local operator
This holiday is operated by a company based in the holiday destination and they will be able to provide expert local knowledge. They will be able to tailor make your holiday to suit your requirements not only concerning the dates of travel but also typically the standard of accommodation, and thus price. It is rare for local operators to be able to help with the booking of your flights.

How this holiday makes a difference

This tour combines luxury with environmental and cultural conservation. In Sapa, we use ethnic minority local guides and accommodation and pay directly to the individuals involved. The Eco-Lodge is an example of good practice sustainable development. All the bungalows use solar panels to generate energy for heating water. To avoid pollution, wastewater disposal facilities have been installed.

Building materials and supplies were sourced locally, and the employees are ethnic minority people.

The Evason is one of Vietnam’s most environmental hotels. For example, all its building materials and employees are resourced locally. Timber is from sustainable sources. No combustion engines are allowed in the resort area - small solar-powered buggies carry luggage and customers. All furniture, fixtures and fittings are made by hand and by trained local craftspeople. Ingredients are supplied by a large on-site organic garden, supplemented by produce from local farmers and other suppliers. Mosquitoes are suppressed by organic insecticide, harmless to other species and plants. Water is supplied from reservoirs high on the cliffs and a treatment plant ensures that nearby coral reefs are not harmed by pollution. Solid waste is treated and transported to a hygienic disposal centre inland.

Many of the actions listed above apply to Le Domaine, but the smaller resort has also gone to great lengths to blend the resort into the local culture. Local shamans were recruited to ensure that all the local geomantic principles and religious ceremonies were applied to the full, and artisans on the island were employed to build the villas in local style. The exception was the resort’s high thatched roofs. The traditional skills on the island dwindled away, so an expert from the original source in Malaysia was brought over to train the locals, thus re-establishing a forgotten craft and a new source of income.

Shining examples of best practice of sustainable development and environmental conservation are rare in Vietnam. As a company deeply committed to responsible tourism, we are very pleased to work with these three establishments. This tour fits our philosophy admirably. It’s a means of alleviating poverty, conserving our indigenous culture, protecting the natural environment and, at the same time, providing our customers with an unforgettable luxury holiday.

Luxury holiday in Vietnam

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

It was all highly memorable. We particularly liked our visit to a village outside Hanoi where we met with local people and were able to ask questions. We also loved staying at the Metropole in Hanoi and the Residence in Hue which were both outstanding hotels and great bases from which to explore the cities. The local guides were both excellent - it was the next best thing to having a friend who could show us round. It was great to be able to ask whatever questions we liked and get interesting and informative answers.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Whilst it is good to have some of the meals included/paid for as part of the itinerary, you may wish to consider not having quite as many included as was suggested by the tour operator as this allows you to control your intake (generous portions meant we felt somewhat obliged to eat everything!). We would have preferred to arrange our own evening meal during our visit to Hue as the restaurant was not the greatest - other restaurants on the itinerary were fantastic and well worth visiting. We are used to being quite independent but we know that some people prefer to be 'guided' so your preference will dictate whether or not this advice is relevant for you.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

We felt that money was going into Vietnamese pockets, apart perhaps from our stay at the Accor Group Hotels. However, even there, the staff are clearly benefiting from tourist income which is great. The use of a car to transport us with our guide was probably not ideal but we would have hated to have been crammed onto a coach with a lot of other people.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It was excellent. A really great introduction to Vietnam which we hope to return to at a future date.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Staying with the family in the homestay near Sapa - great fun.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Longer in Halong Bay - and try to stay on a boat that allows you to swim / kayak more.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Most staff were local so obviously some economic benefits. Not sure about minimising the impact on the environment though - at the Evason the coral reef is badly damaged and the ropes for the buoys still drag on the coral, they are planting non-indigenous plants and burning existing vegetation.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent - very interesting, some spectacular scenery and great weather and people.

Read the operator's response here:

From time to time certain areas of the reef do change and we are continuously making changes and looking into these areas. We are certain looking to rectifying the piping below the water villa areas. The rope in question has nothing to do with the reef nor is it damaging it, the rope there is only for a small boat to carry guests directly from the water villas. In the meanwhile please be assured that we are striving to carry on our core purpose, which is to create innovative and enriching experiences in a sustainable environment.
