How this holiday makes a difference

On this trip: We stay in locally owned hotels, eat in local restaurants and use locally owned transport - this helps distribute amongst a wide number of people the money we spend. Because our groups are small they have very little impact on the areas through which we travel. On the Amazon we stay in an eco-friendly lodge.

Responsible code: Being Responsible is at the heart of everything our company does - full details of our code can be found on our website. The local supplier for this trip will promote our responsible travel code throughout your adventure. You will also receive specific information on this trip’s responsibility in your trip notes.

Helping to minimise negative impact: All of our customers are invited to offset their international flight emissions. Contributions go to the Blue Ventures Carbon Offset program, a non-profit organisation which provides solar stoves for subsistence communities in Madagascar, benefiting the people and protecting the environment. We also contribute £2 per person towards offsetting of your in-country travel. We fully offset all emissions from our staff travel and run an energy efficient office.

Giving something back: We have a foundation that collects the funds that you donate to us to support our projects. All our customers are invited to make a £1 per person contribution to the foundation at the time of booking. We will match every contribution that you make with our own £1. You as a customer choose where these funds are used from a shortlist of nominated projects – so it really is YOUR foundation.

Partnerships: As a company we support The Travel Foundation, a UK charity that has been established to promote responsible travel practises throughout the whole of the travel industry. We also work with a number of charity partners who work in the destinations that we visit; including Friends of Conservation and Born Free Foundation. We partner with many small grassroots projects throughout the destinations that we visit - they all share our responsible vision.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Rio was the least interesting. Everywhere else was fantastic. Amazing sites. Great circuit. The local guides in Iguacu & Manaus are useless (nothing more than what we had read in travel guides: a bit sad) although very kind. Amazon lodge guide and Rio guide great.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

On a private group: pre-travel notes are insufficiently detailed. English is barely spoken. Be ready to go on a Rio tour as soon as you touch land: you won't go to your hotel after a full touring day...OK with teenagers, could be rough on younger kids. Don't believe you've pre-booked helicopter flights: they just don't do it!

Brazil is extremely expensive. You can double all prices given in "travel notes".
Poor hotel standards, food quality is poor whatever hotel standard: Don't expect too much. Stock up on veggies before!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

We sadly had little exchange. Locals have little concern about environment at all: Plastic cups & beer cans happily float on the Amazon river. But lodge owners are mostly foreigners who do care about local communities & the environment. We did not really feel welcome, except on the Argentinian side at Iguacu falls.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Great sightseeing, but guides could do better to keep thing exciting for youngsters and make us get the local vibes.

Read the operator's response here:

We are obliged to use local guides for some city tours and I regret that those provided in Iguacu and Manaus were not up to scratch. Great to hear, however, that the guides in Rio and at the Amazon lodge were good.

This is a fast paced trip, the distances in Brazil are huge and we pack a lot into the time available. We appreciate, however, that this can be challenging with children and are happy (with private groups ) to discuss making amendments to the itinerary to suit individual families.

Our Product team have been asked to check the local costs indicated on our trip notes and they will be updated. The fluctuations in exchange rates and and the general economic climate have resulted in changes in local costs this year, however, we would apologise for the inconvenience this caused.

The hotels we use are generally 2 - 3 star and tend to be functional. However, we try as much as we can to use locally owned properties, reflecting something of the country being visited. It is disapponiting to hear that the standard was not as expected and the food poor, this feedback has been passed on to the Product Manager responsible for our Latin America product.

It's a shame to hear of the lack environmental concern you encountered and the underwhelming welcome received in Brazil. However, It's great to see that the trip was successful overall and that you have some wonderful memories of your experience.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The entire trip was extremely memorable, but, the most exciting part was swimming in the Amazon River System.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Travel as light as humanly possible. Whatever you think you will need, I guarantee you won't.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes and no. This holiday involved a lot of flying and as such I would assume produced a large amount of Carbon Emissions per aircraft used. The local people were involved in the holiday from start to finish. They were a great asset to the trip and were working hard throughout.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The holiday was absolutely fantastic but very tiring. I would rate it as excellent though. If you want to see a great deal of Brazil and only have a short time to do it, then i would recommend this holiday every time.
