Description of Self guided sea kayaking in Croatia

This is an independent, self guided sea kayaking holiday in Croatia, so in one way you are paddling alone, but in another you have the support of dedicated local kayaking experts to advise you on the itinerary. Because it is self-guided, some experience of sea kayaking is highly recommended. Starting in Dubrovnik, we will help you decide which islands to kayak to, how long to spend on each one, let you in on the best secret coves to access, as well as other walks and cycle trails to seek out when you want some on land time. Or the perfect sunset view.

We will book all your local accommodation (and restaurants if you like) and you can also join us on some of our regular group kayaks if you like, such as one around Dubrovnik’s medieval city walls, which is a wonderful site from the water. We will also provide with you all the equipment you need including kayaks, of course, maps, meteorological forecasts, GPS, mobile phone as well as an emergency number so that you can contact us at all times. We have a speedboat to access you at all times in the unlikely event of an emergency.

Hello. If you'd like to chat about this holiday or need help finding one we're very happy to help. Rosy & team.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Self guided sea kayaking in Croatia

We work with local guest houses on the islands and we do not take the commission from the local guesthouse owners.

All of our guides are aware of their surrounding and they are constantly providing the travellers with suggestions of how to minimize potential negative impacts to the environment and marine ecosystems. Our guides emphasize on the importance of leaving the environment as it is. We observe marine life but we do not disturb it.

Our kayaks are made of recyclable plastic. They do not cause any form of air or water pollution and they do not produce noise that could be disturbing for marine life.

We suggest that our travellers visit historically, culturally and environmentally important sights (Old Town of Dubrovnik, Renaissance villas on the island of Sipan, Nature Park Lokrum).

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Getting out on the sea and being able to travel at your own pace. The Islands are amazing and Miljet is a must see place, we loved it.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Don't book it too late in October, we traveled on the 9th and it felt like we were too late in the season and the holiday provider had mostly shut down. We felt we were a bit of a pain for them wanting to do this trip at this time of year. That being said we LOVED Croatia at this time of year and places were open everywhere we went...so go do it, if you want it, it's worth it! If you are doing the self guided package make sure you do know a fair bit about kayaking, we both have over 10 years experience working and playing on the sea and if we hadn't of had that much previous experience it would have been pretty scary! We took our own cags and wetsuits which meant we were warm enough at this time of year too, so worth popping them in your luggage!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes we feel it benefited locals, meeting lots of friendly Croatians along the way, selling local produce and seeing them working in their own bars/restaurants etc. We traveled mostly on public transport so in this way it reduced our carbon footprint (along with being in kayaks too!).

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It was a good time, with many kayaking adventures...and it was our honeymoon, so will be a memory forever. Perhaps a bit more information and support during our time out there would have made it just that little bit more perfect, as sometimes we felt a bit alone with no information!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Our first evening, we arrived at Lopud early evening and we set off at about 7pm and we kayaked for a couple of hours while the sun was setting. it was beautiful and very quiet on the water.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for the weather. When it is sunny it is really hot and lovely being in the kayak but need to make sure you have a high factor suntan lotion on and well covered. But when there is bad weather, the sea can become very choppy and hard work. Would recommend sea sickness tablets - these were offered to us by our guide on a couple of occasions. We cancelled one day due to
bad weather.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes - we ate at the local restaurants and stayed in local accomodation.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very good. Our booking was not straight forward but nothing was too much trouble to be sorted. We enjoyed the kayaking because we were able to get away from the the throng of tourists and it was an ideal holiday for the 3 active teenagers we had with us but easy enough for the adults. The teenagers would have liked to "explore" more while they were kayaking rather than just getting
form A to B.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The sea kayaking and snorkelling on Lopud island was great fun. It got quite interesting in terms of high waves on the way back which was a welcomed challenge. Also the cycling on Mljet around the Lakes was nice being able to swim at many spots.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take water shoes! you need them everywhere: for kayaking and getting into and out of the water as there are always pebbled stone beaches. Only change island after 3 nights. Anything less doesn't give you the chance to get a feel for the place.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

No, we didn't feel this particularly.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A great organisation from the holiday provider as they planned us a tailor-made and self-guided trip. They provided quick transport as well and took the hassle out of bookings and planning.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Kayaking around Sipan close to the imposing rocks, caves and arches. Truly memorable.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

You may have to put your own kayak onto and off ferries so pick a light one. When the operator gives you the mobile phone make sure you learn how it works. All the messages are in Croatian. I had to ask a barman to unlock it for me.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Definitely. We stayed in small guesthouses or camped and ate local meals. Many of the locals make their own wine which we were able to purchase (or get free in some cases!!!). Kayaking has to be the most environmentally friendly way of travelling.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A really good break which allowed us to kayak extensively each day, at our own pace and with lovely overnight rests in a variety of different places. Excellent maps were provided by the operator and we had frequent updates where accommodation had changed. Additionally the operator was willing to change location for overnights at our request as well.
