Villa holiday in Kas, Turkey

How this holiday makes a difference

This is a property that is 100% owned and maintained by Turkish locals. In fact our villa holiday in Kas provides full time employment to an entire family all year round.

We are always experimenting with new ways to reduce our impact on the environment and to reduce the use of harmful chemicals. We hope soon to implement a water filtering system that will eliminate the use of chlorine altogether from our swimming pool. Other cleaning products where possible are eco friendly. The water heating system uses solar panels and all the bulbs in the house are energy saving, and where possible, so are the electrical appliances.

We make an effort in our information booklet and through the use of strategically placed notices to remind guests to reduce wasteful consumption of water and excessive use of AC machines.

We have also petitioned the local authority to place recycling bins on the Kas peninsula so that visitors and locals can now recycle paper and glass. This is now in effect as of 2011.

Though we call our house a villa, it is in fact our home. We feel that it maintains a close architectural link with the historical houses of Kas and surroundings. The interior is influenced by traditional décor with Turkish rugs, kilims and wall hangings. On this villa holiday in Kas, guests will feel at home, and experience what it’s like to “live” in Turkey as opposed to an ordinary hotel experience. Shopping for food alongside locals at the wonderful Kas farmer's market will be one of the highlights of your stay.

He believes that the incredible hospitality, curiosity and warmth of the people, as well as the landscapes and history, are what make Turkey so special. These ambient holidays offer an opportunity to see the country through the eyes of a local.

Villa holiday in Kas, Turkey

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The setting was fabulous. The villa had a path to the sea with a sea platform and also had a lovely pool and garden. The views across the bay from the bedroom windows were spectacular and the weather was consistently sunny and hot. Seeing the villa and it's location was particularly memorable but we also enjoyed spending time in Kas and going on boat trips etc

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for the heat if you're travelling there in July. It was extremely hot well into the evening; about 35 degrees celsius in the day, and we could have taken fewer and cooler clothes. You have to be careful to drink lots of water and watch your alcohol consumption! Best to avoid July/ August if you can't cope with the heat.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

It did in that local people were employed to service the villa and tend the garden but there seems to be little recycling in Turkey. We put our rubbish out as requested but could not find any facilities to separate and recycle glass, tins, plastic, paper etc. This is a real issue with plastic as you have to drink bottled water and lots of it!

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We had a fabulous time. We loved the villa and it was a wonderful holiday.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

A really functional villa and in a perfect setting for families.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Try to buy produce at the local farmers markets and eat as much as possible at home. The restaurants are extremely expensive and the quality of food and choice very poor.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Very much, they take every opportunity to ¨"fleece" the holidaymaker.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very good, the owners of the villa and the service was as good as one could ever expect.

Many thanks for these comments. I feel that perhaps they are a little harsh on Kas which in relation to other holiday destinations around Turkey actually has relatively reasonable prices in the main. One can still sit down for a soup and basic meal for around £5 per person for example; namely at Seckin Restaurant.

Some restaurants indeed are expensive, some bars too are very expensive, but these are not necessarily run by what we would term 'local people', those are more the simpler, no frills establishments which are still cheap and community based. The local fresh produce market too, as mentioned in the review, offers great quality produce at low prices.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The most memorable part of the holiday was the extraordinary views across the Med to the Greek island of Meis. Sitting by the edge of the Med and diving straight in at the bottom of the private path down from the villa.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Everything was so well organised I don’t think travellers to this villa need any tips!!! Would recommend having a traditional Turkish bath and massage. Our whole family went and it was fantastic.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes. Local people were employed to manage issues for travellers and Omer the gardener brought us bread every morning. As we were self catering all our money went into the local economy.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This was the most fabulous holiday we have ever been on!! The villa was out of this world, the setting was amazing, the people were wonderful and the food in the local market and the restaurants was fab. We will definitely go back as soon as possible.
