How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
This trek takes place on the classic trail to Base Camp Everest. During our stay in Kathmandu we use locally owned hotels to ensure the local economy benefits from our presence there. While shopping, we give recommendations on how to haggle appropriately and to bear in mind that the idea is not to get the cheapest price possible but to come to a mutually agreeable price and to have fun! We encourage people to check that the item they wish to purchase is not made from a restricted material such as ivory, coral or taken from unsustainable sources.
Prior to departure, all our participants are given documentation with information about cultural etiquette, local religion, polite language phrases, information about what to wear and how to behave in the destination country. This information will help the individual integrate comfortably into local culture and enjoy their stay even more, whilst respecting the local people. We also offer information about how people can pay to offset their carbon emissions to reduce our impact of such a long flight to our destination.
Group sizes on this trek are limited to a maximum of 25 to ensure that not only is the group small enough to get to know one another and be manageable for the guides and staff but also to reduce the physical impact of our presence on the route in respect of the trail being worn down, toilet facilities being bombarded and water and electricity being used to excess. It also helps to keep numbers to a minimum when you are faced with a yak on the wrong side of the trail, taking up the entire path!
This trek involves trekking through remote villages in Nepal all the way to Everest Base Camp. Each day there is an opportunity to make a difference to the lives of the local people; whether it is by buying a pretty trinket as a gift of which the money can be used to pay for a child’s education, remembering to keep the trail clean to ensure we adhere to ‘leave no trace’ tourism, showing your appreciation of the amazing staff by tipping your Sherpa’s and guides and by simply staying at teahouses and learning from the local people about their way of life. This trek is an unique way to give something back to the local community through positive tourism.
Community
Our guides, Sherpas, transportation and cooks in Nepal are all local. Aside from the local staff being much more qualified to give advice on the trek itself and information about the local area, this ensures that we are giving employment opportunities to local people. We only work with local companies who provide a good working environment for their staff, such as being properly equipped with weather appropriate trekking gear and being paid appropriate wages. We encourage individuals to donate any unwanted trekking gear to the clothing bank after their trek to ensure that porters have the opportunity to receive high quality equipment. We also ask our trekkers to treat the local staff as they would like to be treated; with respect, dignity and care.
During the trek, we stay in locally owned accommodation such as teahouses and guesthouses. All participants are fully briefed on good environmental practices such as how to appropriately dispose of litter, refilling bottles and purifying water instead of buying bottles and not wasting electricity and water by turning off lights when they are not required (or better still using a solar powered, or wind up torch when possible). Clients are advised to take biodegradable toilet paper, soaps and other eco-friendly sanitary products to ensure that our impact directly on the environment is minimised and to keep the trail in good condition for future generations of trekkers. When washing facilities are available, we suggest water usage is kept to a minimum.
