Trekking for health in Nepal

Travelling with a local operator
This holiday is operated by a company based in the holiday destination and they will be able to provide expert local knowledge. They will be able to tailor make your holiday to suit your requirements not only concerning the dates of travel but also typically the standard of accommodation, and thus price. It is rare for local operators to be able to help with the booking of your flights.

How this holiday makes a difference

This trek takes you into rural areas where the locals are benefitted through porterage, stay in lodges, and eating of the local produce. Some treks also support community projects. As this particular trek focusses on organic food, most of the food eaten will be local produce.

We are based in Kathmandu, Nepal, so all proceeds of the trip will go directly to the destination country. We ensure that the damage to the trails and the environment are minimum with a zero-litter goal.

All guides are local and hence benefits go direct into the local economy. We try as hard as we can to slow the trekking to explain the culture and let clients absorb the rural life in Nepal.

The company does not vertically integrate hence allowing the development and maturity of several support industries. We also directly contribute a percentage of proceeds to local development initiatives like the Joy Foundation Nepal which supports free cataract operations and Antardristi Nepal, who is working towards the establishment of a day care center for sexually abused minors.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The 14 day trek to the Gosinkuna lakes and then on to Langtang was really exceptional even though it was the end of the monsoon so the incredible views were often shrouded in mist and rain.. I had an excellent team and especially a considerate and expert guide. I am severely sight impaired and have had difficulty finding holidays that are both empowering and yet make me feel confident and safe and my excellent team managed to make me feel great on this trek. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for a hard first few days whilst you get your wind and fitness. Take vitamin enriched snacks (dry fruit etc) and hand sanitizers and get some clear information in advance about tipping protocol as people in Nepal far too polite to tell you directly even when asked! NB Kathmandu is horribly polluted and traffic is absolutely insane so sitting for any length of time in it is very unpleasant. There are also occasionally demonstrations and strikes and often festivals and special days which can further tie up traffic.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I feel strongly this to be the case in terms of local tourism. I was solo apart from my support team so impact on local environment was minimal.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The holiday was in two parts with the trek first and then a couple of days in Chitwan national park and Kathmandu. After the trek everything rather paled in comparison. So trek 10 out of 10 and the other bits 6 to 7.

Holiday Reviews

We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
