Flights/trains at Xmas & New Year
For the Christmas and New Year period you need to book your flights or train tickets early to ensure availability and good value for money. Travel to Lapland around the holidays fills up very quickly and is normally difficult to book by the end of November. Scandinavian Airlines www.flysas.com offers direct flights from the UK to Kiruna. Veolia Transport, www.bokatag.se, offers train tickets from Stockholm/Arlanda airport. Travel through Kittilä in Finland is also possible.

How this holiday makes a difference

We are a small locally owned company working together with other local companies to provide small-scale activities and genuine experiences of Lapland.

We are committed to a way of life that recognises the interconnectedness of all things and fosters peace and understanding within ourselves and in our world. This lies at the heart of all we offer and is the essential focus of many of the activities and programmes we arrange. We strive to step more lightly on the earth, support the health of our guests and our community, protect biodiversity and conserve water and energy. This includes:

- Elimination of waste through reusing, recycling and reducing consumption of material products
- Providing our guests with healthy food, locally and organically grown whenever possible
- Water conservation through a water recycling system and by ensuring that we minimize polluting any water source or water body
- Maintaining a dry (compost) toilet system where human waste is recycled into the natural ecosystem
- Reducing the consumption of and/or release of any substance that may cause environmental damage to the air, water, or the earth or its inhabitants
- Protecting biodiversity and conservation of the small ecosystem on our property.
- Conserving energy and making every effort to increase energy efficiency and use renewable energy sources
- Asking visitors to respect local conditions, people, nature and culture. Our guides and hosts inform about and encourage awareness and appreciation for the local environment and culture
- Using local suppliers whenever possible
- Continually evaluating our progress towards sustainability

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Doing the Northern Lights tour when it was -38 degrees at night- plodding through the snow and seeing the stars clearly. Didn't see the Northern Lights that night but was not disappointed as it was so beautiful! The most exciting part was finally seeing the Northern Lights the night before I left.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

If possible check the weather forecast before if you want to see the Northern Lights but otherwise there are other things to do and the setting was so relaxing/tranquil.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes, local people were relied on for some of the activities. The house has compost toilets and recycling bins.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

If I had spend more time there I may have given the retreat 5 stars as I was well looked after, the food was excellent and I would be keen to return to try some other activities but we shall see.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Seeing reindeer in the forests near Junosaundo, Sweden.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

I went in the 'off' season, so many things were closed. If you can, go during the 'tourist' season if you want to do and see everything. I find it to be quite nice, since the lines weren't long and there weren't mobs of people.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes and no. We bought gifts from the locals, but because it was off season, we couldn't take a bus from Kiruna to Junosaundo, and had to have the owner of the retreat collected us at the airport.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I had a great time, saw lots of interesting sights and met some really great people. From Stockholm to Lapland, the people were very friendly and helpful. We had no problems using public transportation.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

It's hard to say which part was most memorable - watching the Northern Lights dance in the sky as the swans sang on the river, walking in the crisp morning leaves and seeing the mist rise from the lakes, spotting reindeer among the trees... the holiday was filled with wonderful sites and sounds throughout and our hosts helped us make the most of every day.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Maya and Mikael will work closely with you on arranging all the details of the holiday. They are more than happy to answer any questions in advance of the visit, and I found this really helpful. I would recommend bringing lots of layers as temperatures can change a lot - we went in September and days were quite varied. I recommend the wood fired sauna and yoga options if you're into those things.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Absolutely. Maya and Mikael do everything to minimize impact on the environment, it was very inspiring. The house is made with a complete ecological awareness, and they work closely with local people to arrange all the trips. Mikael's family has lived in the region for many years so they are wonderfully knowledgeable and caring when it comes to the local area. We also found that local people were very happy and excited that we were visiting the region and were always keen to help when we needed it.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This is the best holiday I've been on. The accommodation, food and activities were at once simple and wonderfully rich, and the area is supremely beautiful. I definitely hope to come back and experience different seasons. I would fully recommend it to others who want a beautiful, quiet and rejuvenating break.
