Trekking holiday in Venezuela

Small group adventure holiday
Typically you will be sharing your experiences with between 4-20 like minded travellers (depending on the trip, operator and how many others are booked on the trip) and you'll have a group leader with you. Whether you are travelling alone or with friends its good value, and a great way to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of privacy. This trip will appeal to travellers of all ages who enjoy meeting new people as well as seeing new places.

How this holiday makes a difference

We travel through remote, territory rarely seen, mainly on foot, and where we do need transport we use a variety of small vehicles to reduce environmental impact. During our hike we ensure we make minimum impact, using marked trails and ensuring we do not litter or harm the environment in anyway. We also use local Indian porters which benefits the local community along with encouraging interaction and cultural understanding. For most nights we use local, rustic accommodation and for some we sleep under simple jungle shelters.

Our agents, tour leaders, guides and suppliers are all local. We recommend that our clients bring water purifiers and a water bottle on this tour rather than supplying them with bottled water. Plastic recycling facilities are very limited in Venezuela, so using a water purification system helps limit our impact on the local environment.

As well as the above, we support a variety of charities and projects worldwide which support vulnerable communities and habitats including Friends of Conservation, Hope Worldwide and Send A Cow. We are also actively engaged with UK travel industry bodies which promote best practice in responsible tourism, such as Tourism Concern, The Travel Foundation and AITO. Our commitment to responsible tourism is not limited to our overseas operation and we have measures to ensure our UK office operates according to our responsible tourism policy. Carbon offsets for all flights booked with us are included in the tour cost.

Trekking holiday in Venezuela

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Trekking up and on Mount Roraima was the most exciting part of the holiday, especially as we ascended in two days (rather than the usual three) and could spend three nights under rocky overhangs and two days exploring the strange rock formations, primitive vegetation and quartz valleys. The jungle river journey was more fun than anticipated but was delayed by a day because of low river levels. We were not able to walk to the base of the Angel Falls because the river levels were too low for access, but we did have the opportunity to fly over the Falls instead.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Have plenty of layers of warm clothing (including a waterproof top layer) and a comfortable mat. I had to hire mat and sleeping bag because my luggage failed to travel with me and nights without a decent mat were sleepless! Make the most of time spent walking on the top of Roraima as there's much to interest. Expect to get wet on the river journey! Don't rush to change dollars into Bolivars ... rates of exchange can vary considerably so take the advice of the guide.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Some thought was given to the disposal of rubbish and faeces, so that our impact on the environment was minimal. Hiring porters to carry luggage provided work for the locals (as well as making the trek more enjoyable) and they undertook it with enthusiasm, including the girls!

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very good and Roraima quite a different experience from any other mountain I have ascended. The river journey was fun, if somewhat wet, and the Indian boatmen were extremely skilled. [It would have been even better if I had had my luggage, but that was the fault of the carrier.]

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Several standout moments: reaching the top of Roraima and swimming in the Angel Falls probably the best.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be very careful what you pack! And be aware that there may be an inordinate amount of packing and transferring and repacking, etc. The dossier unfortunately was not entirely accurate and information given centrally not the same as we were given on the holiday.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent (with the provisos re baggage and packing). Itinerary was good, the trek fantastic, reaching Angel Falls by dugout canoe was a wonderful experience, as was sleeping in hammocks in jungle shelters. The tour leaders were very good and made sure everyone did as much as they wanted or were able to. Definitely to be recommended.
