How this holiday makes a difference

Serra dos Órgãos National Park is an example of how desperate a place needs to become in order for travellers and locals to care for it. Today travellers arrive looking for a true experience of nature.

Park fees from all visitors are re-directed for its maintenance. Local establishments have started to teach their employees on how the Park is of environmental importance, and conservation efforts are slowly growing, for example signs of endangered local fauna and flora. Trekking is by nature a low impact activity, and a vehicles will only be used to take travellers to nearby towns. On the treks, you will be accompanied by a local English speaking guide/biologist.

You will be staying in local inns which employ local workers and provide them with careful training so they can better assist travellers in their needs. Meals will be prepared locally, taken from an organic vegetable garden. Evening live performances by local musicians will bring travellers closer to the Brazilian music and the Bossa Nova Rio de Janeiro is so famous for.

During this trip you will have a chance to learn about the local culture. Nearby towns will provide entertainment to those looking for live entertainment & a meal out. The nearby town of Itaipava famous for its hand knitting crafts and marvelous culinary chefs will be visited, as well as Petrópolis where travellers will see main sites and learn about its past history.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Most memorable were the amazing views from the campsites. I could have stayed there for hours exploring, relaxing and enjoying the vantage point from the near tops of mountains overlooking the valley, Petropolis and Teresopolis. Also was a rock structure called "the turtle" which formed an enclosed cave like area where people could actually take shelter if necessary or explore.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Tips would be to make sure you bring thermal liners (if hiking in winter for the nights) and a waterproof/goretex pair of pant liners if hiking during winter. Also bring a little peanut butter and Gatorade. You can easily carry a little yourself since your guides are carrying the bulk of supplies. Also I would encourage those with more experience to take the trip from Petropolis to Teresopolis and for those with no experience to hike one day to the campgrounds from either city and stay there for 2-3 nights with day hikes. Either way, my greatest tip is to GO THERE!!! I have been through Switzerland, Austria, Ireland, Grand Canyon, Alaska and this rates as one of my BEST experiences.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I think this trip is GREAT for the local populace. They are friendly and go the extra step to make sure you are satisfied. I do think that this trip in environmentally safe.

4. Any other comments?

Thanks ***** Gotta give it 5 stars. My guide even drove me back to Rio and spent the day with me giving me a tour of Ipanema and Copacabana. I was hiking through a rain forest, slept atop a mountain, and then got to walk the beautiful beaches of Brazil!!
