How this holiday makes a difference

Luxor, Egypt is the world’s most treasured antiquities sites. It is on the exclusive UNESCO World Heritage Site List. Unfortunately the city of Luxor is facing many problems. Urban sprawl threatens historical sites as well as agricultural land. Many parts of the city is lacking infrastructure. Uncontrolled cruise traffic gave raise to serious environmental problems, such as sewerage and other discharges from the vessels. Luxor needs to fight all these issues to maintain its viability as a desired tourist destination, and accommodate the rapid expansion of tourism and agriculture. Due to all these threats, Luxor city has been witnessing a lot of development in the last two years which has involved moving some of the locals out of the houses to new areas.

One of the small orphanages of Luxor is called the Holy Book orphanage and has 26 boys had to move to another building as their old house had to be pulled down since part of the avenue of sphinxes that used to connect between the temples of Luxor & Karnak. The new building still needs a lot of work to put it in a good shape make it suitable of the children there. Their needs range between sheets, toys, to desks, beds and chairs. Part of the price of this trip will go as a donation to support the needs of the orphanage.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Far more interesting than expected. The expanse of history was staggering and seeing places like the Valley of the Kings that we’ve read about forever was incredible. For the kids it was Tutankhamen’s tomb and later the contents at the Cairo museum. Bassam, our guide in Cairo was the standout. He was phenomenally knowledgeable, charming, great with children and a very interesting person. He was prepared to talk about anything including current Egyptian politics and was easily able to switch level from adult to kids.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Get Bassam in Cairo! Also Manal at the operator (who must be a total workaholic :) )was phenomenal. She replied to email instantly, was available by phone and called to see how it was going when we were on the Nile.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

We felt isolated from the local people to be honest. The separation of the tourists and the locals was a bit extreme. We brought this on ourselves buy setting up the type of holiday we did, but it would be hard to say we benefited anyone in any way other than by the money we spent.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

4. The organization was superb, even if we were a little overprotected!

Read the operator's response here:

Unfortunately this will always be the case with American travellers into Egypt especially if they are using 5 stars standard. Tourist Police requires from operators to register American travellers coming into Egypt and also submit their detailed itinerary. They randomly select travellers and send security escorts with them or following their sightseeing vehicle. Usually we try to have travellers not to get in touch with all these formalities and we have the local guide act as liaison with the tourist police, which makes the travellers feel overprotected. In addition to spending less time around the sites because of the children which did not help a lot.

We do advise travellers in their documents that much of the road travel and also sightseeing timing has a bit of interference from Tourist police.
