How this holiday makes a difference

On this trip: Visits by travellers to Shekhawati have helped save the havelis from crumbling into dust. Hotels used in this remote region also provide employment, encouraging local people to remain in their villages rather than drifting to the city for work. We have also developed a programme of school visits with our local agent in India. These schools are government funded but would benefit greatly from additional support. You will have the opportunity to visit a school during your stay in Ranthambore. If you would like to offer your assistance by taking a gift they would be delighted to receive the following; clothes (remember Indian children are smaller than those in the UK), exercise books, schoolbags, pencils and crayons, erasers and similar stationary. Although you can take things out with you, goods are available cheaply locally and your group leader will be able to advise you on where to buy things. Please note - there are departures in October and November when you're visit to Ranthambore is at the weekend when the school is closed and visits won't be possible.

Our Responsible Travel Code: Clients who travel with us will automatically receive a copy of our Responsible Travel leaflet. This contains details and advice on how you can make a positive difference when you travel. If you would like a copy in advance of travel please contact us.

Charity Partnerships: We work in partnership with Plan International. Plan works with some of the world’s poorest communities where three out of four children die before the age of five. We also support Friends of Conservation – an international charity committed to working with local people to develop a balance between their needs and the wildlife with which they share the natural habitat and ecosystems.

Carbon Balancing: Global warming is a real issue and is a direct result of your travel. We have teamed up with Climate Care to give you the opportunity to offset the carbon emissions from your flight. You’ll be asked upon booking if you want to donate – with set amounts from £5. As a company we offset the carbon emissions from all staff travel in full.

Our Foundation: We’ve highlighted a few of the ways in which we offer our support, financially or otherwise, and now you can, too. We have set up our own foundation, which will administer funds donated by you. A small donation of £1 per person will be taken when booking a holiday and that money will be put to good use by one of our carefully selected projects. If you don’t want to make the donation, just tell us when you book.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

There were many great moments: taking a rickshaw through narrow Delhi streets; seeing the Taj Mahal; clambering up and down the ruins at Ranthambore; riding an elephant to, and exploring, the Amber Fort; simply sitting in the middle of Connaught Place at sunset.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Do follow the kit guidelines, including rehydration salts in case of sickness. Beware the sun on cloudy days - you may still get burnt! Be open-minded and at least try the local food - there's nothing more irritating than Brits abroad who expect to eat the same food as back home. Take enough memory for your camera! I had to buy a further 4GB! Pack very lightly for two reasons:

1) Although porters offer to carry bags, it is embarrassing if the bags are very heavy.

2) There are many fantastic and great value rugs, textiles, and souvenirs to purchase and you can support the tourist economy by doing so - it would be a shame to be worried about how much weight you can take on the flight home (It's worth checking this as I had 21kg and was told I could have had up to 46kg, which I was surprised by).

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Travelling by rail where possible is clearly good. Our bus was over air-conditioned and too big really for our group which was a shame.

Our guides were all local, and we ate in local restaurants. The hotels are described as "family-run" but what was not made clear was that these are rather well-to-do aristocratic families who have opened up their heritage properties to tourists. While the hotels were lovely and incredibly impressive, it did at times feel that we were a bit removed from the local communities.

Our school visit fell on a national holiday, so our tour leader arranged for us to have a different school visit when we requested it. I would have liked more contact with local communities - I wonder if a visit to a farm for example, might be possible? I'm not sure that our tour leader (who was fantastic and did everything he could to ensure we all got the most out of our trip) was aware that the trip is marketed on the responsibletravel site and that the people who found the trip there would have a particular outlook on their holiday. It was very obvious that not everybody on the trip had found the tour via responsibletravel and there were a variety of expectations as to what the holiday would or should entail.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A great introduction to India, combining historic sites, cities and culture, and nature, and including downtime for relaxing by the pool with a book, if you want.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Cant pick one outstanding part the whole trip was excellent.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Follow the trip notes and recommendations they cover everything you need to know, if you take the Goa extension be prepared for a long wait at Mumbai between flights and be prepared that this wont be in the terminal building until 4 hours before departure but in a waiting area with no facilities!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes the choice of hotels and eating places were all locally owned, local staff used throughout.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Well organised and structured.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Seeing a tiger at Ranthambore. WOW!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Buy presents for the kids at the Deaf school in the UK. We hadn't done this and regretted it. Can you change this on the website as it currently advises people that they will have time to buy things in India? It's a packed agenda and bringing things with you would be easier. The kids have almost nothing (apart from big smiles) so anything would be really appreciated. The only thing we felt could be improved was the legroom in the minibus on the 9 hour journey from Ranthambore to Jaipur. It was pretty cramped.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Superb. Special thanks to our guide Junaid. He was wonderful from start to finish. Nothing was too much trouble and the organisation was seamless.

I have forwarded your comments regarding the school visit on to our Product and Marketing team so that they can update our trip notes, thank you for bringing this to our attention. It is fantastic that you had such a great trip, we will pass your kind words on to Junaid.
