Tailor made holiday
This trip can be tailormade to create a unique holiday for your individual requirements by travel experts with intimate knowledge of the destination. It is a more luxurious trip that will suit those who enjoy immersing themselves in new cultures and environments before relaxing in comfort in some of the best and most characterful local accommodation! Quality and value are the hallmark of these trips.

How this holiday makes a difference

The owners of Hot Springs hotel in Bahariya have encouraged a Japanese NGO to set up ‘The Women's Workhouse’. Here orphaned Bedouin girls are encouraged to learn professions to be able to survive also without husbands or fathers. They also learn the old handicrafts of Bahariya Oasis and prepare them as gifts to be sold to tourists.

The German manager of the hotel, Peter Wirth, has lived and worked in Bahariya Oasis since 1995, and was instrumental in the creation of the, NGO “El Hayat”, which has the preservation of the environment of the White Desert Protected Area as its main goal. Every year volunteer clean-up trips in the desert are executed. On the initiative of Mr. Wirth a Bedouin Driver training programme has been executed to allow the local to safely transport tourists and help manage the Western Desert environment.

For all of our tours we provide customers with an itinerary specific responsible travel guide aprox 4 weeks before they depart. This includes a generic travellers code of conduct which emphasises basic responsible travel advice – e.g. reduction of waste and consumption of natural resources, purchase local produce where possible etc. Our holidays are specifically designed to bring guests into direct contact with locals from a range of different tribes and cultures across Africa. We also therefore provide destination specific guidance including advice on local customs and some key phrases in certain languages (e.g. Swahili). We also offer guidance on how to barter responsibly for local curios and what curios should be avoided (e.g. certain wildlife artefacts such as coral, turtle shells etc.). As all of our guides and groundhandlers are local we also give guidance on what a fair and reasonable level of tipping would be at the end of the holiday.

We support the work of Tourism Concern both in distributing their advice to customers and as an active participant in the Ethical Tour Operators Group. Our managing director sits on this group and is a regular attendee of meetings contributing to work towards developing industry wide fair trade standards. We also distribute materials to customers and make periodic donations for the following charities: Tree Aid; International Fund for Wildlife and Survival International Trust. In Southern Africa we support the Southern Africa Sustainable Seafood Initiative and forward their guidance to all customers on which seafood is sustainable when offered a choice at restaurants.

Story of the holiday provider

Whilst volunteering on a coral reef in Tanzania, the founder of this company fell in love with Africa. Using her academic background in environmental science, she decided to do something practical and help the continent develop a sustainable tourism portfolio. She developed holidays which combine the obvious itinerary highlights with more unusual experiences such as home stays and township visits. She believes that there are great benefits to travel: it is a chance to widen your horizons, learn about other people and see a bit more of the world than just that little place you call home.

Cairo & Egypt holiday, tailor made

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Going inside the Great Pyramid, sailing down (up) the Nile in the Dahabiya, Hadeel, instead of the big diesel monsters they have for most tourists, El Tahrir square and the bazaar. The staff on the Hadeel were fabulous. We were the only ones booked (4 of us) and they were great.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The tour operator was very patient when we had to change our plans several times. Summer is very, very hot. If you can afford to go in high season, it would problably not be so draining so far as the heat is concerned. This was our only window of opportunity since we had to coordinate people coming from 3 different locations with different schedules.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes I did. We did need a tug boat to get us most of the way because of the wind coming up the Nile. Maybe if we had started in Luxor and gone to Aswan we could have used the sails more. Still a diesel tugboat doesn't put out as much pollution as the big tour boats, I hope. I do feel local people were benefited. The boat and crew were all local. The tour agency in Cairo, Aswan and Luxor seemed to be local.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I've had many wonderful travel experiences through Responsible Travel so can't say it was the best ever but so far they have all been the best vacations we've had. Of course every trip I've ever been on falls into that catagory because travelling is an expansion of the soul.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Getting to Giza in time to see pyramids at sunset, Felluca trip on the Nile and the
view from Hotel roof top in Luxor.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Beware of over priced drinks in hotels and on cruise boats, buy your own from local shops if you can. Take Deet! Make sure you get a sleeper train with a cabin to Luxor or Aswan, not the First Class seats they are truely awful.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes, we stayed in a small local hotel in Luxor on West Bank. We used local guides, transport and drivers where possible. We ate in local restaurants, cafes etc and bought items from local shops etc.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Overall it was a great 5 day trip, we packed in lots - Cairo, Giza and Luxor. If we went again would like sleeper train from Cairo-Luxor, we didn’t know we had first class seats instead of the sleeper cabin, this was a disappointment. The 1st class seats are truly awful, plenty of room but filthy and lights never go out so very difficult to sleep and noisy too.
Hotel in Luxor was small friendly and local, it was being refurbished whilst we were there so not at its best. Would go back in 6 months or so and I’m sure it would be better. Fantasic location.

Seeing Abu Simbel in the early morning.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take a good dark pair of sunglasses as the reflection of the sun from the limestone and sand in the Valley of the Kings etc is quite blinding!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes.
