Northern India tour

Small group adventure holiday
Typically you will be sharing your experiences with between 4-20 like minded travellers (depending on the trip, operator and how many others are booked on the trip) and you'll have a group leader with you. Whether you are travelling alone or with friends its good value, and a great way to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of privacy. This trip will appeal to travellers of all ages who enjoy meeting new people as well as seeing new places.

How this holiday makes a difference

Spread across the erstwhile princely state of Rajasthan are a large number of smaller forts, palaces, castles, aristocratic homes and havelis that were once home to families that ruled over India. With the passage of time many of these magnificent properties were in danger of falling to ruin as the erstwhile royal families were unable to maintain their homes.

With their recent conversion into hotels, the former royal residences have acquired a new lease of life. By staying in these heritage hotels we help to ensure that these properties continue to be maintained in a befitting manner, and that a way of living that was losing ground to the 21st century, has been preserved for a little while longer.

As much as the families, the family retainers whose ancestors once served within these royal homes, have continued to find employment. And a slice of history that would otherwise have been irretrievably lost, continues to survive. With one major difference: You too can now be a part of it!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Staying at the fort in Pachewar and visiting the village, especially the cookery demonstration. The traffic of all sorts was amazing. The Taj Mahal was breathtaking but the other highlight has to be all the cookery demonstrations and friendly helpfulness of everyone, especially the tour guides.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

An extra day in Delhi prior to starting the tour would be beneficial as arriving with jet lag, having a busy day and then a 4am start on the following day was a bit of a shock!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes - especially our use of public transport. Although we may have preferred to fly from Mumbai to Goa as our 2nd sleeper train journey initially felt like 1 too many, but in the end it was fine.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent - only let down by the poor hotel in Ahmadabad - that needs changing to something better and Melodius Waves in Goa was very basic and the rooms not very clean - maybe review that accommodation too - a pool here is a must!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Seeing such a variety of places in Rajasthan but obviously the Taj Mahal took some beating.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Do not go on the camel safari as it the worst and most boring I have ever experienced. Brace yourself for staying in the Cairo hotel - miserable staff in reception, complete lack of interest in resolving problems in spite of the fact that half our party of 15 complained. The rest of the staff were fine.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Not in the least. Too many tourist only restaurants and stopping places which had extremely high prices sometimes 4 times the normal price.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A very enjoyable holiday which was made all the more so because the people I was with were so friendly.
