Your Uganda tour includes Bushara Island Camp, a popular facility on Lake Bunyonyi (Lake of the Little Birds). The first of its kind, the camp is a stopover to and from Gorilla tours, a bird watcher's haven, and a private place for retreats. This small island is peaceful, safe, natural, and suitable for families, as well as being a special hide-out for all travellers.
The perfect location to get away from it all, Bushara Island is a wonderful place to relax in nature. The green hills and papyrus swamps offer many opportunities for bird watching and Eucalyptus trees provide quiet place to sit and read a book. However Bushara is so much more just a nice place to visit.
The income generated by Bushara camp goes back into the community. Bushara Island and its agro-forestry program employ a large number of men and women in the surrounding communities and offers an apprenticeship for those who are interested in careers in the hospitality and/tourism industry. Bushara Island Camp also supports craft making, orphan care, swimming lessons, and boat building The camp is operated by the community, as is the restaurant, and cultural tours and dances that promise to delight you.
While staying at Bushara Island you will assist in the building of a house for those who desperately need a home. There are many widows and grandmothers who live far below the poverty line with little or no means of income. Providing them with a small house will provide them an opportunity to be self sufficient in a society that has no social welfare system. This should prove to be the highlight of your trip as you get to interact meaningfully with the local community, and make a positive impact in their lives.
A minimum of 10% of our profits goes straight into funding our community development volunteer project partners. All costs of materials and administration are included in the trip price. Bushara Island Camp is a sustainable eco-tourism facility focussing on raising awareness and promoting protection of the environment through such things as utilizes composting toilets. The camp supports local community development through agro-forestry extension work.
We invite you to come and tour our agro-forestry nursery on neighbouring Bwama Island. Over it’s fourteen year history the camp has developed into one of the finest eco tourism site in Africa visitors come from over forty countries.
