Travelling with a local operator

This holiday is operated by a company based in the holiday destination and they will be able to provide expert local knowledge. They will be able to tailor make your holiday to suit your requirements not only concerning the dates of travel but also typically the standard of accommodation, and thus price. It is rare for local operators to be able to help with the booking of your flights.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Lycian way walking holiday

Environment

We are a locally-based tour operator, fully committed to running our tours in a way that reduces the impact on our environment and contributes as much as possible to the local community.

All the accommodation that we use for this trip is locally owned and run. The small hotels and pensions we use are actively committed to environmentally-sound practices such as conservation of energy and water, and use of organic foods.

We accept a maximum number of 10 people on this trip, because we believe that small groups minimise the impact of tourism on the environment. In addition, a small group size enables local people and visitors to interact in a more meaningful way, benefiting both sides; and for the same reason we ensure that the group is accompanied by a guide who speaks both English and Turkish.

One way that we minimise the impact on the environment is by using vehicles as little as possible and by using group transport. Of course hiking itself is a very environmentally friendly, non-polluting way of exploring the beautiful outdoors in this part of the world.

In addition to minimising any negative impact, we aim to create a positive impact on the environment by introducing visitors to the great variety of flora and fauna found here, much of it rare and endangered. To this end we provide participants on this tour with illustrated notes about the natural heritage of the area, including information about Turkish environmental organisations. If you would like to offer your support to any of these organisations, we provide contact details. Our aim is to raise the consciousness of both visitors and local people about local conservation issues.

Community

We are a locally-based and locally-owned tour operator. We are fully committed to running our tours in a way that reduces the impact on our environment and contributes as much as possible to the local community.

All the services that we use, such as transport and restaurants, are locally owned and operated, and as much as possible we buy supplies for our trips from village markets and shops.

Our use of small accommodations in rural villages provides an important source of income directly to local people, and provides you with a wonderful opportunity to experience and the rural way of life at first hand.

Our staff is made up mainly of Turkish people as we feel this benefits all involved, and is the best way for our guests to gain an insight into Turkish culture. We are committed to training our guides to a high standard, and to this end we arrange our own training activities for our staff - our director is an experienced and internationally qualified outdoor instructor.

We support the local community in their efforts to preserve their environment, for example the campaign of villagers in the Yuvarlak River area to protect their river against a proposed dam construction project.

We work to promote good relationships between tourists and the people who live in our area by promoting interaction with the local community, for example by faciliating conversations with villagers when we meet them during our tours and by buying their produce.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

All aspects- the terrific scenery, great trails, fantastic guide and group and
the impeccable organisation, welcome and care taken.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Look at flights carefully. There are many different ways to fly there. Book a
flight which arrives and leaves at a reasonable time of day. I think it would be
good to stay one day after trip is over -for example in villa rhapsody, as I did.
Be aware of temperatures/seasons- April is best, if only later suits-be prepared
for it to be hot. Remember to have turkey visa organised before you go. Have
guides number on whats app.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, they were very consistent on this.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The holiday was excellent, I would even consider going on the same one again.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The best parts of this tour were the wonderful informative guide with loads of local knowledge and fabulous stories and the range of stunning scenery that we traversed. We got to see village life, learn about (and see evidence of) ancient and recent history and met some lovely fellow trekkers.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Medium fitness required - there were some steep uphills but the days were well-paced and very enjoyable. Surprisingly few other trekkers and confusing paths in this area made a guide highly recommended.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I definitley agree. We stayed in local small establishments run by people with whom the guide had good rapport. The food was all regional, sourced locally and delicious. Some places had refillable water sources reducing impact of plastic. Walking in this area increased my appreciation of this environment.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

As a first-time tour attendee, I was unsure about walking as part of a group, but I found that the whole experience totally enjoyable. The group was cohesive and fun and we learned so much about Turkey and the region. I would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys walking in beautiful coastal countryside.

We arrived home early hours this morning, tired and in love with Turkey!!! Can I firstly start with saying that Sally was just an amazing guide. Her enthusiasm about the area and concern with keeping that region intact and raw was just outstanding! Sally went out of her way to ensure that we were safe and happy at all times far beyond our expectations. Sally speaking Turkish is an enormous advantage also, so lovely to hear her greet every villager warmly, even though we did not know what she was saying:))
We loved all of the accommodation, but Villa Rhapsody was definitely our favourite. The food was just delicious and the hosts were incredibly friendly and I could even do laundry, an important thing when you are backpacking with teenage boys!!!
If I was to do anything differently, I guess I would have perhaps an extra day or two at Villa Rhapsody and do some hiking from there. Each place was just wonderful. On our last hike we went into a really small village and had lunch with a Canadian lady called Brea(I think) and this was lovely. Perhaps a night there and a hike from there would also be great although I am unsure about accommodation or the standard. Way too much to see and not enough time.
The Dim hotel in Goeck was probably my least favourite but I guess we were out of the small villages and into a larger one and this could be expected, though the hotel was quite old. Goeck was a nice location to leave from, the Ocean, boats and restaurants created a lovely ending.
We are looking forward to returning to Turkey very much and miss it already.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Just amazing and everyone should do this trip!!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Absolutely, just wonderful interaction with locals, carried any waste with us and ate the local food. Amazing

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Mind blowing and we cannot wait to do more travel.

The finale - arriving at the ruins of SIDYMA.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for adverse weather changes, even in June!
'Moderate' is quite tough, especially in the heat of June.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Definitely.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Superb.
