This programs works in a range of pre-schools, schools and local language centers to give the children within the local communities to practice their English language skills with fluent speakers; and improve their educational and employment prospects as a result. The local teachers have few educational resources, as the national government is heavily dependent on foreign support-aid, and as such as a volunteer you can make the difference by providing additional supplementary assistance, and be part of the effort to broaden educational opportunities in Laos. As Luang Prabang and the nearby communities develop their tourism and adventure potential, the importance of well resourced and effective English language skills, learned from a young age, become evermore apparent.
The owner of this company did a gap year trip in the early 90s which involved building a bandstand for a small village in Patagonia. While he was there, he realised the project was only helpful in developing the Western traveller as the village didn’t want a bandstand and only argued about who owned it. And so he set up a volunteer organisation which is useful to communities and provides them with resources and help with funding. Today, his projects offer travellers an opportunity to fully integrate into communities and to make a real long-term difference to the local people’s lifestyles.
