Transylvania walking holiday

How this holiday makes a difference

This hiking holiday contributes to the environment by enhancing awareness of the forest region of Transylvania and introduces a variety of landscapes to guests. Since the hiking groups are small, the impact on the environment will be minimal.

The guests will also come into contact with communities outside the village, which will give them a greater insight into the ethnic tapestry that composes Transylvania. Our small enterprise provides employment for local families. Most of the food we serve as well as the building material we use is traditionally produced in the village and its surroundings.

We aim at restoring and preserving the historic architectural harmony of our village and its environment. The guest houses are part of the village and our guests become neighbours to the villagers for the length of their stay. We show our guests nature still in its unspoiled way. We monitor wildlife around the village and make the villagers understand why it is so important to preserve it. We promote sustainable tourism also by limiting the amount of rooms available.

All our employees are local and benefit from high training standards. Our staff is now skilled in their new professions, be it the cook, the guide or the restoration worker. We purchase most goods locally, even traditional building materials like hand made tiles, bricks and lime. Our taxes go to the local council helping to develop the village. Profit generated by the guests is re-invested directly in the restoration of our cultural heritage. Thus the entire village largely benefits from our undertaking.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

There were several very memorable aspects to my holidays. The walks/hikes and scenery in Romania was absolutely fantastic. I have never seen anything like it before.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Go with an open mind. Make sure you book what you want - if you want culture book culture, if you want nature/treks, then make sure you book nature/treks - make it very clear.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes, local people worked at the estate and did all of the food and tours. So absolutely.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

My holiday was very good. The accommodation was average but still nice and clean. The food was really good and I was never hungry. There was plenty of wine on an evening and I spent virtually nothing.

The scenery was stunning and the wild life even more stunning.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Seeing so much wildlife - we saw loads of different woodpeckers, a shrike, a muskrat, wild boar, bear tracks (and bear poo), bats and a great many flowers and plants.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Learn a bit of Hungarian before you go (lonely planet phrase book was good). Get the train from Bucharest to Brasov as this was a fun experience - slow enough to get a good feel for the landscape . Wizzair was much better for service and reliability than Blueair if flying from the UK. The food for vegetarians was good.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes as the guesthouses employ many local people pretty much all year round. All staff live locally. Measures like the efficient woodburning boiler and solar water heater minimised impact on the environment. The business raised awareness of local culture and wildlife.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This holiday was fabulous - it was extremely relaxing being so far from civilisation. It was possible to walk all day and see hardly anybody. The food was excellent (huge quantities) and so was the local wine, beer and brandy (also plentiful!) Staff were all very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed all the animals - seeing the cows return to the village, rides on the horse and cart and the rare breed chickens.
