Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Family holiday in Romania, tailor made

When designing a tailor made family holiday we always try to bring into the spotlight the genuine Romanian character. Be it a festival, a visit to a traditional rural community or a home cooked meal; we try to include in the itinerary items to reveal the genuine Romanian culture.

To make sure the money stays within the visited community we’re only using local suppliers, from the guide services to transportations and accommodations. We encourage our guests to purchase locally produced goods and include in the itinerary meetings with genuine characters such as craftsmen, artists, visit to rural communities and accommodations in country-inns or other small family run business.

Apart from these, we’re making financial contributions for every persons who books one of our tours or programmes in the amount of £1 per person to support Saint Daniel’s Foundation programme entitled “A grand father for a nephew – A nephew for a grandfather”, helping elderly and orphans, people most in need.

We encourage our guests do a little reading before coming to find out more about their host communities and the environment so that they would connect better with the locals. We provide suggestion on how best to support the local economies and communities, as well as the surrounding environment. Guests will receive a pre-trip information pack via e-mail, to minimise the use of paper, which will inform them about issues relating to the place they will travel, some language tips and general advice. Furthermore, our tour guides are well-educated multilingual people who can offer guests their skills as an interpreter and offer up-to-date details on current national and regional issue

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

To quote my son, when asked the same question... I liked all of it!!

However, if I have to chose particular moments... Getting a feel for the rhythm of village life on a glorious spring morning in Biertan, taking an evening stroll alongside the locals in Brasov and making it to the top of the 1426 steps (my younger son counted!) to see the view from Poienari Citadel.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

We went to Romania in Spring and I would recommend going there at Easter (which is a little later in Romania than Western Europe) as it is a major celebration. Autumn, as the leaves turn, sounds beautiful too.

My other recommendation is to go with an open mind - The transport infrastructure in Romania needs investment, as do many of it's monuments and the legacy of the Communist era is still visible in places (particularly housing blocks and the occasional abandoned factory)... but having said all that... I would whole-heartedly recommend visiting... it is a fascinating country, that has stunning scenery, a rich history and people who are both forward looking and retain their traditions. I loved it... and so did my two boys.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes - The company itself is based in Transylvania and run by people who you can see care about the country they come from. The hotels we stayed in on our tour were all locally owned (typically family run) and we had the opportunity not only to learn about Romanian culture and history, but also meet local people.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Romania is a beautiful country, the people are genuinely welcoming and any holiday where you chill out, have fun... and still learn a lot... has to be good.

In terms of the tour company themselves, I can't give a better recommendation than the fact that I want to go back to see the parts of Romania I didn't have time to see on this trip... and I will definitely be asking this company to organize that for me.
