How this holiday makes a difference

Part of what makes the Camino Portugues so special is that you get to experience first hand the simple rural way of life in remote villages in this part of Spain. During this holiday you walk from small village to small village on a unique route which is marked by the distinctive scallop shell.

All hotels and guest houses that you stay in are small and locally owned and we book directly, ensuring maximum benefit for local communities. We pay our guides, local services and accommodation the market price for their services.

You walk independently but your bags are delivered each day using local transport. We send you maps for each days walk plus other useful information to help you get the most out of being a 'pilgrim'. Because you travel as an informed tourist, you get more from your holiday and you will know how to minimise the environmental impact of your visit.

As a company we are members of and actively support the work of various organisations; Liga para a Prototecção da Natureza, Quercus – Associação Nacional de Conservação da Natureza, Instituto da Conservação da Natureza and Flora and Fauna International.

Because our walk leaders are frequently walking in protected areas we are able to monitor the countryside and report to the appropriate authority any damage to the environment and any flouting of the rules and regulations particularly in relation to new buildings.

As much as we can our office recycles waste and we use recycled products when ever possible.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Getting up each morning and looking forward to a route that was well signposted, through the most beautiful countryside and not seeing many other hikers en route!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Buy the John Brierley book - Camino Portugues. It was absolutely fantastic and gave so much information about the places we passed on the way. It is almost an essential requirement to get the best out of what is seen.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes in that their economy was enhanced by what we bought. I felt there was minimal impact on the environment

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Absolutely fantastic. I would recommend it to anyone! The only changes I would make would be to where we stayed in Porrino. When we arrived at the hotel parque we were sent to a room that hadn’t been cleaned and beds unmade.

There was chewing gum all over the stairs and it was not a nice hotel. The owner was not particularly friendly to say the least.......! It was however wonderful to arrive at fantastic hotels for both the first and last nights. The holiday was just fab!!

Thank you Julie for a great great time

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

It has to be finishing the walk at Santiago Cathedral.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for the long walks, it is hard on your feet as there is quite a bit of walking on tarmac, and we were unlucky with the weather, some torrential rain on a couple of the days made the walking uncomfortable, although we were well prepared with waterproofs the rain still managed to get in.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

As we travelled at a quiet time of year, we were, in some cases, the only guests in the hotels, so it must make a difference if only in a small way. The impact on the environment is kept to an absolute minimum by just being thoughtful about keeping to the routes, taking litter with you and being careful about water usage .

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I would recommend this holiday if you are used to 20k+ walks. The hotels en route were well chosen and very comfortable.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Although this was our third time walking the Camino Santiago de Compostella. It was still as fantastic spiritual experience as our first. I do not think that there is a walk like it.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Prepare well and walk at your own pace if walking as a group spread out so that everyone can go at their own pace. Do not let yourself be pushed to fast it leads to injuries and possibly worse blisters.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

The Camino does not impinge overly on the local population and they seamed to love people walking through their area. They were very friendly and offered advice on directions cafés etc. We often received gifts of grapes as they were being harvested as we passed. I would like to see more emphasis on asking your clients to be careful and not litter the pathway

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

As I said in the first box this is the most spiritual walks available and having the bags brought from hotel to hotel meant that all we had to carry was a small day pack. We walked the Camino in a holiday mode. The small hotels were a joy to stay in and will give us confidence of arranging holidays in hotels in out of the way places where the locals do not have a lot of English.
