How this holiday makes a difference

Community
This region of Swedish Lapland is relatively undiscovered and has yet to fully benefit from the investment in the local economy which other regions have experienced as a result of tourism.

The region’s base economy has change dramatically over recent decades and traditional industries are now being replaced by tertiary services jobs. Tourism is leading the way in the region and it is hoped that the increased employment opportunities will help stem the flow of rural to urban migration.

This holiday initially starts in the small resort of Storklinten. This resort is owned and managed locally and is an excellent source of employment in the region.

The vision of the management here has enabled a great number of jobs to be created and the guides and staff which you meet are wherever possible local people. The restaurant also serves as much local produce as possible in order to help increase the tourism multiplier effect in the region. All new developments in the area are strictly managed and monitored to ensure that any environmental impacts are reduced and that proper assessment can take place.

This holiday also features a very special excursion to the town of Jokkmokk, the cultural heart of Swedish Lapland. We feel that is exceptionally important guests experience the traditions and culture of the Sami people and there is no better place in which to do so. Guests are led by a Sami guide so that they are able to get first hand information about the people of the area.

Environment
Our holidays rely on visiting beautiful and un-spoilt areas. Naturally we wish to maintain the natural settings in which we work, not just for the future of our company, but also for future generations. We always insist that our local providers are equally conscious of this need. Excursions which are undertaken throughout the holiday use marked trails in sensitive areas and measures are in place to ensure that the groups’ visits leave no trace

The TREEHOTEL based in Harads is a brand new development and exceptionally exciting concept. The 6 room units have been designed by architects and designers and each concept is truly unique. It is the brain child of a local couple who currently operate a historic listed guesthouse in the region. They identified an opportunity to create something special and bring guests to the region and hopefully help employ more local people.

The TREEHOTEL has been designed with strict environmental guidelines at the core of the plans. Energy is sourced from renewable energy supplies, innovative eco toilet facilities and waste management systems have been employed and the natural environment in which the TREEHOTEL sits has been the number one priority throughout the design process.

We always ensure that all litter is removed from any of our activity sites, we strongly encourage group transfers to reduce traffic volumes and we make our clients aware of their obligation to the environment. We always offset our air travel emissions and would encourage you to do the same.

Story of the thingstodo provider

The founder of this company started as a family summer operator over 10 years ago. When he started adding a few Lapland holidays he was amazed at how popular they were and, avoiding the ski resorts, he set up more snow holidays in privately-owned accommodations in the wilderness. Today, these places are filled every winter with people living the dream - going on husky safaris across frozen lakes and cooking on log fires beneath the glorious Northern Lights. Many visitors book these holidays as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity but find themselves returning again and again, unable to resist the magnificent snowscapes.
