Tibet Everest Base Camp tour

Travelling with a local operator
This holiday is operated by a company based in the holiday destination and they will be able to provide expert local knowledge. They will be able to tailor make your holiday to suit your requirements not only concerning the dates of travel but also typically the standard of accommodation, and thus price. It is rare for local operators to be able to help with the booking of your flights.

How this holiday makes a difference

Although this is mainly a driving tour we continue to support Responsible Tourism through ensuring all local vehicles used for transportation are serviced frequently in addition we fully comply with Government Road Worthy standards. This ensures minimal gas emissions are lost from our vehicles, poorly maintained or malfunctioning vehicles can release as much as 10 times the emissions of a well-maintained vehicle.

The accommodation along this tour is of a very basic standard, as our accommodation partners provide basic facilities, minimal energy is used for the operation of the Guest Houses along with minimizing the use of non-bio degradable products, organic vegetables, fruits and consumables which are sourced from the surrounding communities to benefit the local villages.

With the help of our local Tibetan guide our passengers genuinely gain a firsthand experience and insight as they travel through the different areas with a great benefit from their knowledge on places to eat and stay which best support the local people.

Project for the blind commenced in 1998 in Lhasa with the opening of the first rehabilitation and training centre for the blind in the Tibetan Autonomous Region. We encourage individuals and groups to visit and make contributions both through interaction and financial donations. This centre provides four main services:

- A preparatory school for children from all over the Tibet Autonomous Region, who are first given intensive ‘orientation and mobility’ training and then learn to read and write the Tibetan, Chinese and English Braille scripts.
- Training for teachers in mainstream schools that receive children who have been prepared by the centre.
- A Braille book printing house where schoolbooks are printed in Tibetan Braille, using a computer programme developed by a blind, German mathematician to convert Tibetan script into Tibetan Braille.
- Vocational training courses in areas such as medical massage and physiotherapy, music, animal husbandry, agriculture and handicrafts.

Tibet Everest Base Camp tour

Reviewed 23 Aug 2010 by Alan Levy4 star rating

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Seeing the Himalaya Mountains, seeing Everest so close up at base camp, TIBET, was amazing. The beautiful city of Lhasa, the debating monks in the monasteries. The scenery overall was breathtaking.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

We travelled as a family of 4, with kids aged 13 and 11. Be prepared for the effects of the high altitude, although it doesn't stop you from doing everything on the trip, it does make you feel tired and headachy. Also, pray for good weather in July/August, we were lucky!

Do not take your Lonely Planet Tibet book or have any other Tibet history literature on you as this will be confiscated by the Chinese authorities on arrival in Tibet. Our LP book was confiscated.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes, by engaging and buying things from local people as well as the fact that local Tibetans see westerners is a good boost to their morale, as the country is under miltary rule and the people have no freedom at all.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Fantastic holiday, although a bit hard with the altitude making it seem like an endurance test, the breathtaking scenery, being so close to Everest, the atmosphere and culture of Tibet makes this an experience of a lifetime and one I would recommend to any adventurous families.
