Turtle conservation volunteering in Thailand

Volunteer travel - what's it all about?
Are you looking for an adventurous trip with a purpose, or on a gap year or career break? If you want to make a difference in some of the world’s most important conservation areas - and in community projects - then volunteer trips are for you! Volunteers tend to have a sense of adventure, and come from a range of different backgrounds and from all over the world.
Edward Abbey said 'sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul'.

How this holiday makes a difference

Without the centre, the turtle population of Rayong would be critically endangered and disrupted. The work of the centre ensures the turtle population is stable and safe plus helps to raise public education and awareness. By volunteering here you will be actively contributing to turtle conservation plus helping to reduce the staff workload. You will be also supporting the importance of the centre and helping to protect its future.

You will be staying at a local guesthouse in an area off the tourist trail, therefore contributing directly to the local economy. The guest house employs only local people, approximately six people. All recyclable rubbish is located by the local people for resale to generate much needed local income. We pay for the fuel to the island. We also regularly pay for all paints etc. needed to maintain the island’s facilities. As we are a growing company we donate to all our projects when we can and the money goes where it is needed most. All our support staff are Thai people. All the island’s staff are from the village and employed by Thailand’s Ministry of Marine and Coastal resources.

Travellers are encouraged to use local facilities. None of our placements include food. We encourage our volunteers to eat at local restaurants. Our Thai coordinators advise volunteers on good places to eat locally, supporting the local community and enhancing their experience. We wish our volunteers to become part of the local community. Our staff give all our volunteers a full orientation to the area, showing them all local amenities: shops, restaurants, internet cafes, post offices, etc All our volunteers receive a briefing kit which talks about dos and don’ts. Moreover our staff are always on hand to advise, help and ensure our volunteers have a positive impact.

All of our projects need financial assistance, help with planning, technical support and project management and we support where and when we can. As an organisation we do not print brochures. We minimise paper by using internet and email. We always support locally owned businesses, hotels, etc. We believe in putting back into the local economy and one of our key aims is to support small scale long term development initiatives throughout Thailand.

Turtle conservation volunteering in Thailand

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Seeing the breeding programme for sea turtles in Thailand. (It's a pity that we didn't get to see the island where the wild turtles lay their eggs, though. I thought this was part of the plan.)

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared to look after yourself. The enjoyment you get out depends on how self-sufficient you are and how much you are willing to put in. Also, ask a lot of questions before you go to find out about the living conditions and the project itself. And be prepared for stray dogs ... lots and lots of stray dogs.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Most important, it would be good to know how the money that I paid for my holiday was spent by the operator. I would have liked to know how much of it was making a difference on the project that I was working on. For example, the project wanted satellite tracking equipment, and I don´t know if I was helping towards this. In addition, Thailand suffers greatly from plastic rubbish, and we were adding to this on the mainland, if not on the island. A small project to (for example) generate power from burning rubbish would be of great benefit, I would imagine.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Good. The local project support in Laem Mae Phim was excellent, although the initial information on the project from the operator could have been more complete and more accurate.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Being with the turtles and feeding them was definiately the highlight - but I only got to do this on two occasions during the week. Cleaning the tanks with a small scrubbing brush and toothbrush, was very hard work but rewarding.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for the mosquitoes and be independantly minded, the local coordination was a rather lacking. I would have been grateful for some information on what happens to the turtles when they get shipped to other provinces, this wasn't communicated to me despite me asking specific questions to our coordinator/interpretor. We were asked to apply medications to the baby turtles but not given any real instruction which worried me.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I didn't get the feeling that we were really doing anything of any real help other than the physical labour of cleaning the large turtle tanks, no-one on the Turtle island spoke English and so communication was very difficult.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

For the money I spent going there I expected to be looked after rather better, maybe shown around the area a bit, at least have clean sheets, and warm water for a shower in the evening.
