How this holiday makes a difference

One of the main factors in choosing the location of our holidays is the presence of local communities which can benefit from low-impact responsible tourism. We work to bring new income to rural restaurants and small family-run enterprises, and our locally based manager lives as part of this community, in a rural village. They source the majority of packed-lunch ingredients directly from their village neighbours: delicious fresh vegetables picked that day from gardens, and cheese from local shepherds.

We work closely with the Majella National Park to ensure that our presence has positive benefit to the region. Our directors and staff are involved in local projects to assist the Park in clearing and restoring footpaths which facilitate access to areas of natural beauty and historical importance.

The locally based Forest Protection League has an otter breeding programme to reintroduce these elusive animals to the Nature Reserve of the Orfento Gorge which lies directly below the town of Caramanico. We arrange organised visits to the Otter Breeding Centre to support the programme and develop understanding of the project.

All our local transportation is carbon-offset through a scheme in place with the Carbon Neutral Company. Our brochure production and distribution is also carbon offset through a similar scheme, and we offer all our clients the opportunity to offset the carbon emissions caused by their flights too. We encourage and arrange train travel and provide details on how this holiday can be reached by train, thereby avoiding flying altogether. Our brochure and all other literature and correspondence uses recycled paper, and we operate a rigorous recycling and energy saving policy both at our UK office and all our destinations, as well as encouraging and assisting our local suppliers to do the same.

Walking holiday in Abruzzo, Italy

Reviewed 13 Aug 2008 by Christine Barton4 star rating

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Some breathtaking views and the opportunity to spend time in beautiful unspoilt surroundings with hardly another person ever in sight.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The directions in the handbook are excellent - you can be confident that you won't get lost, either on the walks or navigating the Italian roads. Don't miss the Lama Bianca and San Tommaso walks.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Not sure but the local people were very friendly and there was evidence of recent investment in the area which was good to see; it appeared to be thriving.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The people we encountered were all very friendly and helpful, it was relaxing, enjoyable and a bit different. The hotel Pesco Falcone had all the mod cons you would need and a nice restaurant but the bed wasn't the most comfortable and breakfast could certainly have been improved on. The packed lunches every day were great. You do need the car to get the most out of the region and driving around hairpin bends and on Italian motorways can be tiring. It was also very hot on a couple of days. I would however definitely recommend both the holiday and the tour operator - we had a lovely time.

Read the operator's response here:

We are so pleased to hear that Christine enjoyed all the elements of her holiday in the Majella. Some of the ways in which this holiday benefits the local community may not be immediately apparent. In addition to the hotel, we also encourage visits to a number of rural restaurants and local projects such as a mountain botanical garden and an otter-breeding sanctuary. Also, the ingredients for the packed lunches are sourced not only from local shops, but also directly from shepherds and village gardens in and around the mountain village of Decontra - maybe that's why they taste so good! The hotel were also grateful to receive this feedback. They assure us that all their beds have high quality orthopaedic mattresses, and that in addition to the coffee/tea, fruit juice, cereal, croissants, yoghurt, fresh fruit and home made cakes that they offer for breakfast, if a guest would like anything extra, they need only to ask.
