Self guided walking holiday in Bulgaria

Travelling with a local operator
This holiday is operated by a company based in the holiday destination and they will be able to provide expert local knowledge. They will be able to tailor make your holiday to suit your requirements not only concerning the dates of travel but also typically the standard of accommodation, and thus price. It is rare for local operators to be able to help with the booking of your flights.

How this holiday makes a difference

This tour is a lifetime experience and the best way to get to know the nature and the habits in the heart of Rodopi Mountains.

The villages this trip passes through have been closed for decades as being located in the restricted border area between Bulgaria and Greece. At recent times we have started to promote those regions not only because of their famous hospitality and untouched nature, but also in order to foster the efforts of the local people in developing a quality product, that is really connected to the conservation of the local environment.

The accommodations that we have chosen are family-owned guesthouses, where all clients are served organic food of a very high ecological value. Furthermore they may have the chance to enjoy in one of the places a unique home-made folklore program including traditional songs, dances and bagpipe playing. We encourage our tourists not to avoid the nature fountains that are abundant in the area for filling up their water bottles.

As typical of all departures, this tour very rarely gathers more than one group on the same route at the same time. This ensures a pleasant and a very relaxed walk for couples or small family groups who can enjoy the landscapes and the cart roads following their own pace.

We believe that what we have now as an environment is not a legacy from our ancestors but something we have borrowed from our children. We will do our best to preserve it and improve it as much as we can. We directly support nature conservation projects, donating money, or providing vehicles for different NGO actions like forestation activities, monitoring of waterfowl, winter counts, research projects on specific species/habitats etc. We provide local nature conservation NGOs with discounted prices on our rent a car services or hostel accommodations for their every day job, workshops, training etc. common initiatives.

We recycle paper and reuse paper in our office; all printer cartridges (incl. laser jets) are also subjects of regular recycling. An online version of our printed brochure is available for online viewing at the website, which reduces considerably our paper consumption in terms of print runs and mailing envelopes. We have also adopted a variety of energy efficiency measures at our offices like outer wall insulation, energy saving light bulbs etc. A bird feeder, supplied with huge amount of seeds, is always available by our office in severe winters.

Self guided walking holiday in Bulgaria

Reviewed 01 Jul 2008 by Michael Kelly4 star rating

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

If I can be permitted two, they are: 1) The walks through the Rodopi Mountains: wonderful scenery and lots of very interesting flora and fauna. 2)The hospitality we received in the guesthouses.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Abandon any preconceptions you may have.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Judging by the welcomes along the way (not just from the guesthouses) I think the local people feel they'll benefit from this type of tourism. Apart from the transfers and luggage transportation which are by road from necessity, the impact on the environment is negligible.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent.

Holiday Reviews

We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
