How this holiday makes a difference

On our trips we sail by wind, therefore we can still travel and see our fantastic world without emitting harmful emissions. So this blue cruise is not common done by motor, but we sail as much as possible by wind! We use the motor only due to anchoring procedures.

We love to create an easy going friendly atmosphere on the ship and we highly value each and every passenger on board. Many testimonials from guests tell us about psychological effects on their health and well being and how this positively effects their daily lives. To avoid the negative impact of mass tourism, we guarantee to avoid crowded harbours and bays. Also the ships only carry up to 12 passengers maximum. Our ships always stay overnight in quiet and smaller places. Depending on the wind direction and the guests wishes, the captain daily will program the sailing route and point out the places of interest.

We support and host local underwater and beach clean-ups. Our guests are encouraged not to collect any corals or shells from the sea or beach. They are encouraged though to help us clean any garbage that they see in the water or on the beach. We have re-usable bags and crates to carry goods to the yacht. We recycle all the waste that we can (depending on the facilities available). We only use washable plates and cups and glasses for serving drinks and food on board. We ask all our customers to minimize water use. We have showers in the cabins and water is heated only after use of the engine. This also encourages customers to have a quick rinse after a swim rather than a full shower in the bathroom. We don’t have electricity at sea so we need to conserve energy while at sea. The boat with A/C is only used on very hot days and if guests would suffer from the heat.

We encourage education through school systems; we offer stagiaires from the maritime education schools places to learn naval jobs. To encourage their graduation we offer them employment at our company. While working for us we train on the job and give them a chance to develop their skills. We employ our staff the whole year around, so there is no seasonal effect on family incomes. All staff members including their direct family are insured for health care and yearly medical check ups. To develop local employment our authentic wooden ships are made by hand on local ship yards, as well as the yearly maintenance of the whole fleet.

We believe that if everyone took small steps to minimize their own impact on the environment, the world would be a better place. The best way for this to happen is for everyone to care and so we encourage interest in the environment and ways to protect it. We often see dolphins on our trips and this is a great way to encourage interest in our environment and the fragileness of the sea! Our holidays encourage people to participate in snorkeling and to enhance interest in our (under) water environment. We never visit turtle-beaches in the season when the turtles are laying their eggs and we do not promote riding camels or donkeys on the beach.

We visit small villages as we travel and restock on route, using markets wherever possible, benefiting the local economy. We prefer small shops rather then large chains. Trying local goods is all part of the experience. For a direct positive effect for example we buy only fish at local fishermen and just the amount we need for direct consuming. We encourage our guests to get acquainted with locals and traditions and their culture. We offer visits to small villages to encourage local sales of hand made products and services. For example like drinking and dining at farmers places and showing their process of making carpets by hand, producing olive oil and gardening. We like to show our guests the enjoyable pace of life in Turkey! We offer people to visit the Underwater Museum in the castle in Bodrum, to inform the public about the rich history and the need of conversation of the sea and its marine life. We provide cultural and social guidance for guests: during the trip one of the crewmembers guides our guests and we have (language) books on board to encourage our guests to speak the language when on land.

We are a family run business as well and we want that our and your children grow up in a clean and safe world which we today enjoy so much! Our holidays are focused on having a great time whilst minimizing our environmental impact. There are so many natural wonders and architecture to see and enjoy along the Turkish Coast.

When guests extend their holiday on land, they are advised not to go to an all Inclusive hotel but encouraged to book local small hotels and buy locally.

Almost 70% of our earth is made out of water and it needs to be protected! From every booking we save €10 per booking to donate to several (underwater) protection foundations who are active in Turkey and Greece. Therefore you will help to both save and enjoy our sea!

Gulet cruise

Reviewed 13 May 2009 by Amy Lane5 star rating

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Certainly sailing along the Aegean Coast with full sails up enjoying the rocky coastline, blue sea and sun without the sounds of cars, telephones and airplanes. The only sound I heard was the wind in the sails and the waves on the hull!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be sure to watch the weather and even though you are in the sun and on the water, be sure to pack some warm weather items, such as a hat and sweater. The evenings can be cool (at least in May). Also - don't bring too much stuff! You will probably wear the same clothes most of the time. This is a sailing adventure - not a fashion show!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes, by working with this operator we supported local businesses, met local people and did not join in any tours or mass activities. Certainly we minimized the impact on the environment! We stopped in a bay with the sailboat and then all got off and hiked over rocky terrain to a small local village and had a nice cold draft beer while we watched another sailing boat operator zip their passengers over to the same spot in a speedy "zodiac" powerboat. We preferred our feet! We ate fresh local foods - all healthy and prepared from whole foods right on the boat. And what is better than using the power of the wind to get from place to place?

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We had a fantastic time. The boat was beautiful, the staff were attentive and very competent. We met great people, ate delicious Turkish food every night and we were sailing the same ancient waters that mankind has sailed for eons. We felt a real connection to Turkey, history and sea.
