How this holiday makes a difference

On this tour, you will visit the famous Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre in Sabah, founded in 1964, to rehabilitate orphan orang-utans. The site is 43 square kilometres of protected land at the edge of Kabili Sepilok Forest Reserve. Today around 60 to 80 orang-utans are living free in the reserve.

The facility provides medical care for orphaned and confiscated orang-utans as well as dozens of other wildlife species. Some of the other animals which end up being treated at the centre include:- sun bears, gibbons, Sumatran rhinos and the occasional injured elephants.

You will also stay in the Gayana Eco Resort which, as well as being a small and intimate resort of just 44 chalets, is also an important Marine Research Centre, which is currently working on a giant clam restocking programme to try and bolster the population numbers of these endangered shell creatures.

The Nature Reserve, located beside Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort, has a forest garden planted with different types of trees and plants to encourage the habitation of insects and small wildlife.

Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts is a founding member of the Asia Pacific Hotels Environmental Initiative. In accordance with the Group's environmental policy, all Shangri-La and Traders hotels have "Green Programs" to identify ways to reduce wastage, eradicate practices that damage the environment and generally promote environmental awareness.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Staying in the river lodge in Sukau and spotting so much wildlife - amazing!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take lots of extra clothes on the expedition as you perspire a lot in the humidity - but absolutely nothing smart.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes, all our guides and hosts were local people, and there seemed to be lots of awareness of environmental issues.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It was fantastic!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Swimming with sea turtles off Mataking Island.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Bring leech socks and plenty of camera batteries. Be prepared to eat rice/noodles for three meals a day!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes, particularly in some if the smaller lodges. It was good to see some of the conservation projects (e.g. the sea turtle conservation) supported by tourism.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

An excellent holiday - a good mix of relaxation, wildlife and adventure. Very well organised, exceptionally fast and helpful service in the planning stages to tailor-make the holiday to our exact wishes. Accommodation generally exceeded our expectations. The only downside was having to abandon our summit on Mt. Kinabalu attempt due to bad weather - sadly can't control everything!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The wild orangutans in Danum Valley rainforest and the baby turtles being released under moonlight into the sea on Lankayan Island.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Definitely spend at least 2 nights if not 3 in Danum Valley! We organised to stay in Sepilok near the Orangutan sanctuary but you can do the two feeding times plus the video and visitor centre plus a walk all in one day and there is not really any need to spend an overnight here.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes many of the places we stayed in employed many local workers and conservation projects were in place in a couple of the places we stayed and the staff were keen to share their conservation efforts with guests.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

BRILLIANT. A great combo of relaxation, rainforest, beach and culture - the perfect honeymoon for active couples, but also suitable for friends and families.
