Global adventures start with a local perspective – that's our philosophy. Whether abroad, or just as importantly at home, the start point is the same; how to get the most enjoyable holiday for our customers while benefiting the local people, economy and respecting the environment.

These walking holidays are a great way to explore the beautiful Northumberland countryside and coastline, enabling you to take in the surroundings without damaging the environment. The story of the provider of St Oswalds Way walking holiday, Northumberland

Having stayed in touch since primary school, Andy and Paul decided to cycle around South America in 1994. Andy was a keen cyclist but Paul hadn’t been on a bike since doing his paper round. They didn’t have an itinerary and used military maps to navigate through the desert. They had so much fun and met such amazing people that they agreed to set up a cycling tour company together. Andy says their trips create a flexible and intimate way to travel and absorb the local culture and, whats more, you never forget how to cycle – it’s just like riding a bike!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Northumberland scenery.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Navigating is not easy. The signage is dreadful in places and the guide book is all but useless in parts (we seriously wondered if the author had actually walked the route) and these comments are not just ours as we spoke with others who knew about both the above and they did not disagree having heard many similar complaints.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Of course it did, we stayed in B&Bs. As for environmental impact and conservation....?????

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Some coastal sections and the section from Rothbury to Hadrian's Wall were lovely. Rather too many caravan parks and golf courses on the coast.

Read the operator's response here:

We are delighted that overall you enjoyed your walking holiday with us along the St Oswald's Way in Northumberland. I'm sure that you'll agree that it truly is a fantastic long distance walk that explores some of the finest stretches of the Northumberland coastline and upland landscapes that captures the true essence of Northumberland. We were, however, disappointed to read about your experience of the poor signage along the route and that you felt that the Official Guide Book was poorly written. As discussed we have passed these comments onto the people that manage the St Oswald's Way route for their information and action as appropriate.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

This was an excellent walk of almost 100 mls over 8 days; from Lindisfarne to Hadrian's Wall. The most memorable part was completing it! Mostly easy walking, good scenery, especially the coastal part; and a great cafe at the end. All the places we stayed at were very good and helpful, and the local eating places recommended by them were great. The weather as you might expect was pretty mixed; the wet weather gear got plenty of use.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

1) Buy the St Oswald's Way Guidebook to go with the maps . It is excellent and minimises the need to consult an OS map.
2) Check that the actual length of each day is within what you consider a reasonable length for you. This can vary from what is on the website due to the availability of accommodation.. We had one 18 mile day when we thought the maximum would be 13.5. We didn't get the finalised itinerary and maps until we arrived when it was all already arranged.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes, we stayed in small locally owned B&Bs or Pubs, and we walked! We were able to come by train.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very enjoyable, I would not hesitate to recommend it to a friend who walks. A regular fit walker could complete it faster than we did.
