How Egypt and Jordan tours makes a difference

As well as visiting some of the most important sites and learning about Egyptian and Jordanian history, this tour is designed to introduce our travellers to the people and culture of the countries, and not cocoon them from it. This is helped by keeping our group sizes small (max 18, normally 8-14) and also running the tour privately for families, couples or groups of friends.

We take responsible travel very seriously, and have given some details below of how this is implemented on this tour.

Local people:
- We started our operations in Egypt jointly with a new local supplier and have been working and growing with them ever since, creating many new jobs in the process.
- We use fully-trained local Egyptians and Jordanians as our guides, reps and tour leaders, rather than flying in Western leaders whose knowledge and love of the country will never be as full or passionate.
- We use locally owned and operated hotels wherever possible, and one of the highlights of the tour is finding and enjoying a wide range of small local restaurants and snack shops.
- The Egyptian felucca sailing boats and Jordanian Bedouin camp that we use on this tour are owned and operated by local people, not large companies, and their use is an essential support to this community, as well as reducing pollution and energy use.
- We give information and advice to our travellers on how to respect local customs and religious practices, giving them a greater understanding of the local people and culture.

Environment:
- The longer journeys in Egypt are done using public transport, including overnight trains and public tourist coaches, so reducing extra vehicle miles and resulting pollution and energy use. Speed limiters are fitted to the vehicles we use for safety and reduced fuel consumption.
- We use a public ferry to cross into Jordan, rather than driving or flying all the way, which again conserves fuel resources.
- Using felucca sailboats instead of Nile cruise boats also reduces pollution and energy use and damage to the river banks. While on board, we explain the importance of keeping the river environment clean to all our travellers and ensure any waste produced while we are on the river is either buried (if suitable) or taken away with us.
- Explanations are given in Dahab of how to protect the fragile coral reef environment while snorkelling or scuba-diving.
- We have a recycling policy in our UK and local offices and re-use or recycle the information booklets we provide to every client on arrival wherever possible.
- We do not produce a glossy brochure, concentrating on a comprehensive website, and providing as much information to our travellers as possible electronically, reducing the use of paper and inks.

Local projects & charity support:
- We donate £2 for every person travelling on this tour towards local projects – one supporting a small orphanage in Cairo, and another in which we arrange desert clean up trips and promote responsible use of fragile desert environments, particularly in Wadi Rayan and the Valley of the Whales, an important protected area and World Heritage site.
- Our travellers are welcome to visit either of these projects and support them personally if they wish.
- The company also supports further projects and charities internationally. Responsible tourism: We send all our travellers a copy of our responsible tourism policy before their holiday, and encourage them to read it and join us in following the ideas and suggestions contained within it.

The story of the provider of Egypt and Jordan tours

A little local knowledge goes a long way. It turns a good holiday into a truly memorable one. We choose tour operators with a deep connection with special places - people who live and work in the destination and who have fallen in love with it.

So travelling with them is not just a brief stay somewhere, it's a real connection with the people, the landscape, the culture and the environment. It's like really living somewhere and enjoying the peace and quiet or the pace and excitement of the place as much as the people who live there do.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

So many things it’s hard to pick one - the felucca, Valley of the Kings, Karnet, climbing Mt Sinai, snorkelling in the Red Sea, floating in the Dead Sea, Petra and making it to the monastery. But perhaps the best was the insight into another culture provide by our Egyptian and Jordanian guides.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Upgrade to a private tour - the luxury of not having to wait for other! To be able to talk constantly to the guide! Wonderful. Get a sleeper upgrade. Don't go back through a second time - Cairo- fly from Luxor to the Sinai.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Egypt in particular is very dependent on tourists and everyone was really pleased to see us there - so they must think tourists are important. When on the felucca I asked the guide about waste going into the Nile and was told how they collected everything etc - so it was disappointing to see the felucca captain leave a bag of rubbish behind a tree on the Nile bank.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Great fun, exhausting there as so much to do and see, wouldn't have missed it for anything.

Many thanks for your review, and your positive comments about the tour, particularly about our guides who we are really proud of. Just to follow up on a couple of things...

- Luxor-Sinai (Sharm-el-Sheikh) flights
These do save a lot of time yes. However, unfortunately they only run a couple of times a week and they sell out well in advance. The days they do travel don't fit in with our group departure itineraries, which in turn are determined by the cruise boat sailing dates (we offer an optional upgrade from the felucca to a luxury cruise for people who want a little more comfort). So, they aren't really a viable option on our group tours, but we do certainly offer them on private trips, though in general we do try to avoid internal flights if possible. Other ways to get from Luxor into the Sinai include a long (15-18 hours) overnight coach, or a journey to Hurghada, one night there, and then a ferry to Sharm. This ferry again only runs a few times a week and is subject to cancellations due to bad weather or maintenance issues, which leaves you with a long overland journey again. We have tried both of these in the past, but found that bringing people back to Cairo first is overall the most comfortable and effective way to do it.

- Felucca rubbish disposal
We do collect all our rubbish on the feluccas as you have seen. This is then bagged up and intentionally dropped off at selected points, from where it is all collected and taken away. We're very strict on this with the felucca crews, so I will check that the rubbish was left at an appropriate place on your trip.

Thanks again for the review. I hope the above notes are helpful.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

A big accomplishment was climbing Mt. Sinai. The felucca ride down the Nile was memorable but Abu Simbel and Petra were truly amazing.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Wear the lightest possible clothes that you can in a primarily Muslim country. It was very hot almost everywhere in Egypt.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Not particularly. I would have liked to have more direct impact in terms of benefits for local people and while everyone was aware of minimizing our impact on the environment, I did not see any particular evidence of that.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

For the most part quite good - there were a few glitches.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Sailing down the Nile in a sailing boat, drifting with the current, and watching the world go by, relaxing in the sun and cooling down by swimming in the Nile.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared to be constantly on the go, exploring new sights and experiences. Add a couple of days sailing down the Nile as this is the only time you will get to relax!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Not so sure about the environmental impact but local people benefited from all my spending!

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very enjoyable. You get to see a lot of the country and its historical sites.
