Description of Self guided biking tour in Croatia

If you’ve ever fancied cycling in Croatia this self-guided itinerary unlocks just as many of the country’s cultural highlights as naturally beautiful scenery with a recommended route from Korcula Island to the countryside southeast of Dubrovnik a real feast for the cycling senses.

Cycling Croatia on either a five or an eight day itinerary allows you to make the most of the country’s fairly moderate inclines with medieval heritage, Roman ruins and old-fashioned fishing villages adding to the attraction of a mild Mediterranean climate, particularly either side of summer.

Throughout this biking in Croatia holiday full support will be given for cyclists, with transfers, transport, ferry fares and local recommendations just as important as the security of having 24/7 back up just in case you need it.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1:Touch down at Dubrovnik airport and meet your local tour representative who will guide you by minibus to Orebic port on the Peljesac Peninsula, where you’ll make the short ferry journey to Korcula Island. After arriving at Korcula port you’ll transfer-cycle to the village of Lumbarda, on the island’s east coast, depends of the arrival time you will have the opportunity to cycle to nearby villages to get orientated and warm up for the week ahead. Overnight stay in Lumbarda.
Day 2:Day’s approximate cycle distance: 40kms. Cycling over mainly asphalt at an elevation of no more than 80 metres you’ll spend your second day on Korcula Island riding on a recommended circular route from Lumbarda to the town of Korcula. Enjoy sightseeing followed by a cycle along the coast for lunch at the village of Racisce on the island’s north coast. After lunch you’ll return to Lumbarda for your second overnight stay on Korcula.
Day 3:You’ll be out of the saddle today as you take the ferry to Orebic on the mainland and transfer by minibus to Dubrovnik via the historic old town of Ston, which boasts the largest city walls in Europe. As soon as you arrive in Dubrovnik you’ll be taken to your hotel to settle in before embarking on a guided sightseeing tour of the city’s historic central district. Overnight stay in Dubrovnik.
Day 4:Day’s approximate cycle distance: 20kms. Today’s adventure finds you cycling from Dubrovnik to the port of Gruz where you’ll stow your wheels on-board the ferry bound for Sipan Island. The cycling on Sipan encounters paved and unpaved country roads with a maximum elevation of 230 metres as you make the climb up Mount Velji vrh, the island’s highest peak. There will be plenty of chances to swim and soak up the sights before either returning to Dubrovnik after lunch or on a later ferry if you prefer. Overnight stay in Dubrovnik.
Day 5:Day’s approximate cycle distance: 45kms. The cycling on Day Five takes place mainly on asphalt and some gravelly rural roads to a maximum height of 90 metres. After cycling from your hotel to the port of Gruz, after breakfast, you’ll take the two hour ferry ride to Mljet Island whereupon your day’s cycling starts in earnest at the village of Polace, which is famed for its Roman ruins, and takes you through much of the island’s beautiful national park area. Overnight stay in Polace on Mljet Island.
Day 6:Day’s approximate cycle distances: 46kms or 15kms. Today you’re invited to cycle from Polace to the town of Pomena before returning for a morning at leisure. Alternatively, there’s a tougher route to Kozarica Bay via Blato that can also be undertaken before catching the afternoon ferry to Gruz and Dubrovnik. Next stop is one of Croatia’s most picturesque landscapes, Konavle, that’s situated close to the border with Montenegro on the country’s southernmost tip. Overnight stay in Cavtat town in Konavle.
Day 7:Day’s approximate cycle distance: 55kms. Cycling over asphalt within the lush green agricultural landscapes of Konavle is a real treat, with farmlands, Zvekovica villages and the cliffs of Gornja Banda plotting a route along the Ljuta River before you finally cycle back to Gruda. Overnight stay in Gruda town B&B in the Konavle countryside.
Day 8:After one last delicious breakfast you’ll be transferred from the Konavle countryside to Dubrovnik airport in order to meet your allotted flight time.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Self guided biking tour in Croatia

Environment

The highlights of the trip include visiting national parks, areas protected of UNESCO and other fragile environments. We keep our groups small (max 16 people) and we use bikes as much as we can to keep the environment clean and unspoiled. By doing this we also contribute to spreading the idea of different tourism.

We used recycled paper. We recycle all our waste paper (brochures, etc). Our correspondence and promotion is carried out via the internet and email, minimizing the amount of paper used for our activities.

We support different local ecological associations and our staff was directly involved in afforestation (planting of pine trees in Dubrovnik area after fire disaster in summer 2007.) We are active mostly in places where we live, but we support many Croatian ecological organizations (Zelena Akcija).

Besides above mentioned afforestation during autumn 2008 and a couple of seasons before, we directly support and we are involved in the ecological action of cleaning the sea. This underwater cleaning is ecological action which is support by local diving centers and fisherman's associations. The planting trees and underwater cleaning are ecological actions which we have supported for many years and we are one of founders of this ecological association.

We encourage travellers to be more responsible with water waste, and we inform all our travellers before their tour about area, especially travelers on tours when they are in protected areas, sea or countryside. We inform travellers about local cultures and habits, we inform our travellers that leaving litter in the sea or beach could have very negative consequences to the fish, sea ecosystem and finally themselves.

Community

There are so many benefits to the local people, they are main suppliers, especially in the villages where trip take places: from the economical benefits of accommodation, selling domestic food and beverages to selling souvenirs, arts and domestic specialties.

All our guides are local and we train our staff to be more responsible for the local environment and ecology. We buy local products as the souvenirs for our partners and we encourage our guests to buy local products.

We use local services as much as we can. For restaurants we always choose ones with character (mostly family run restaurants with local specialities). On all our tours we use local produce and provide local-style meals, and we encourage our guests to try local dishes and delicacies. We use a lot of locally owned accommodation and this provides direct income for local house owners.
