Yoga holiday in Ibiza, Spain
How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
Saraswati Space is tucked in the peaceful countryside, surrounded by trees at the base of a hill, 5 minutes away from town and within view of the sea. Equipped with nearby shower room, the yoga room is cozy, well ventilated and light-filled in summer. The maximum of participants for Hatha Yoga is 10, plus the teacher, and 25 for meditations.
We encourage our guests to use local transport as much as possible. There are buses and ferries from the town to get around the island, which is a real plus in Ibiza as buses routes are few. Bicycles are also available for hire. Re-cycling is in place and long life bulbs are used. Our excursions will be walking on nature trails, swimming, meditating, so therefore No negative impact on the environment.
We use local produce as much as possible, and organic. We recycle all paper, plastic & glass and there is a compost system on the land. On site we have loads of cactus and plants that I never have to water, in fact the trees & bushes flourish without watering. What's more, I share a well with 4 agricultural families. The water comes down the mountain feeding the farms before it gets to us. We are part of a traditional watering system. The shower & toilet have signs to remind people not to waste water & to remember it is an eco-toilet and that the (recycled) paper goes in the bin.
Community
There has always been a healing undercurrent in Ibiza, and this community has grown and matured while going unnoticed by the mass tourism tendency dedicated to night life and party packages. Now it is emerging and taking its place among the recognized healing spots around the world. At the same time, Ibiza is also experiencing the global economic crunch. The focus is slowly shifting from a single-season (rather toxic) tourism on which the islands economy has depended for years, to a year-round, sustainable and healthy tourism option, for which the conditions are ideal. In participating in this effort, with your presence and your energy, you are part of this shift, helping us heal the wounds (human and geographical) caused by the thoughtless race for economic gain and giving credence to a new paradigm for Ibiza’s future. Guests can camp in the garden of the yoga studio or stay in local pensions or nearby small hotels, within walking distance of the yoga space.
We will be serving food in the near future and will be employing local people using organic food, grown locally as much as possible and health foods brought from local people. At the moment we don't have need to employ anybody. Nora has been teaching yoga to locals for many. She and I together have also trained locals to become teachers on the island. She has worked in conjunction with many people on the island setting up healing/yoga/eco centres. She has lived there for 27yrs, she herself is now a resident and her daughter was born and bred there. She still lives on the island. We have a friend on the island who is a historian and has published a book on the history of the island, we will include snippets of the this on the nature walks and excursions, as I mentioned the Ibiza, tourists generally don't get to hear about.
