How this holiday makes a difference

Our accommodation has been described as a '21st century commune' – you will experience an alternative family lifestyle with a communal, community and environmental ethos. The McCallum family moved from Scotland to France to realise an evolving dream – to reconnect with our environment, to live in the mountains, create a sustainable venue and run 'life-enhancing' courses. It took 3 years and is now up and running and is becoming a 'phenomena'. Journalists have described it as the 'best-eco lodge in the Alps'. Guests often talk about the 'positive energy' here.

The crew and our instructors have a strong environmental policy. We educate all our clients in no-impact camping techniques.

The accommodation is set up for recycling all waste and we compost. We recycle metal, plastic, glass, paper and cardboard and compost and the kitchen is set up to make this easy. We are starting to grow our own veg. We get milk from the subsistence farm next door. We buy bulk supplies from local organic wholesalers.

We used sustainable building techniques where affordable including extra thick Warmcell insulation, triple glazed windows facing North, glass walls facing South, a highly efficient wood pellet burner, low temp under floor heating, organic paint, etc.. We have mountain source water on tap.

We try to consume minimum energy. All our appliances are A or AA and 90% of our lighting is low energy. Our linen is organic cotton and most of our cleaning products are environmentally sound.

Our toilets are flushed with source water (and are dual flush) and our waste water is cleaned, filtered and goes back into the stream as drinkable water. We encourage minimum use of water.

Community:
Our philosophy is, that we are all intrinsically linked; to each other, our environment, all living things and the universe. Our ‘reality’ is governed by our heritage, upbringing, 5 senses and 3 dimensional perception. REALITY is immensely greater with unlimited potential. If we strive to live in harmony with ourselves and each other, with love, openness and awareness the world becomes a happier place. When coming here your body is nourished with healthy food and lots of physical activity and rest. Your mind is soothed by the beauty and immenseness of the environment and spacious simplicity of the architecture. Your soul finds space to breathe away from the business of daily life. Yoga, meditation, relaxation, and rock climbing helps bring you beyond the mind to your Source.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

In a week packed full of excitement it's hard to choose...probably successfully leading a 5C+, a route I was terrified of, was the biggest buzz!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Expect to have a brilliant time!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

The accommodation is an eco-lodge so there was a feeling of environmental friendliness with regards to recycling, cleaning and food. As tourists in the off-peak season I think we would have been important to the local restaurant infrastructure too!

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I had a completely brilliant time. It felt like I was away for so much longer than a week, I've met some amazing people, learnt lots about myself, eaten fantastic food and acquired some incredible bruises! So glad I went.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The people! Our hosts were so easy and friendly, our climbing instructors were professional yet super entertaining, the other guests were all interesting people who had come at an interesting time in their lives. It felt easy and relaxing to be myself with everyone.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

It is fairly expensive but it is not a typical 5* luxury deal. It is much more a family home and a relaxed atmosphere. I think we paid for the people and experience, but don't expect a formal or tightly run ship.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

We spent money in restaurants, cafes, the market and the boulongerie. The staff were English/Scottish/Australian-living-in-Switzerland/New Zealanders, so not a local project in terms of employing people. The lodge itself had been built with travelling overseas tradesmen too, after disasters with local builders. It was easy but not cheap to travel by train to get there and the owners offered free pick up from the train station.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Perfect for what I wanted which was great climbing, great people, easy to be there as a single person, no time to think about work!

Hi Josie, Thanks so much for your comments and feedback and for making the effort to come by train. I just thought it would be good to point out that 90% our courses do employ local people, including our climbing ones. John Falkiner (who is a legendary guide from just over the border in Switzerland) comes over to run a few of our courses every year as we find that he is an exceptional instructor that 'coaches from the inside'. Most weeks you will meet Aga or Didier from the Valley!
