Whale watching tours in the Azores

Oceans specialist

This tour operator is the first of its kind, focusing on the natural beauty of the oceans of our planet instead of the great continents and land-masses. Trips range from expedition cruising, whale and dolphin-watching to sea-kayaking and island hopping. We choose our vessels and guides carefully, and work in conjunction with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, which ensures the highest standards of responsible operation on our trips.

How this holiday makes a difference

Environment
Our tours help the cetaceans of the Azores by adhering to a strict code of conduct in the way we operate our vessel, to create the minimum of disturbance to them.

We use a boat that creates minimal noise underwater and low wave disturbance and we never go too close too the animals.

We use low energy appliances, a super insulated fridge, compost our kitchen waste and grow some of our food in our garden.

We carry out scientific research during the tours and guests on board are funding this by their presence. Our guests get to learn about the species here and get an insight into their lives. We have discovered several new species for this area and worked with several universities to collect and share data on the animals, to learn more about their lives.

Community
Our accommodation uses locally produced foods wherever possible, uses local transport, low flow water taps, renewable energy, and eco friendly cleaning products.

Profits from this tour have enabled Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society to support our research by enabling the purchase of cameras and has also sponsored local children to go to sea for free to learn about Azorean cetaceans.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The enthusiasm of Lisa rubbed off and spotting and identifying the sperm whales was thrilling. Of course the spotted dolphins stole the show one day as they interacted with the 'Physeter' catamaran.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be aware that if you are infirm (I had my 86 year old father with me) then you may need to allow for the costs of taxis to/from the hotel to the marina and to/from the local eating establishments in the evenings. The taxis are not expensive but build up during the week stay, allow for 60euros for the week. Be patient - nature is unpredictable!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Slight disappointment that we were not in the ecolodge, as originally proposed in the literature, but in the very nice Hotel Horta. We ate in local eating establishments and used the local Terry's taxis for short journeys and our island trip, and lunch sandwiches were handmade by a relative of Norbert (our trip organiser) which were good. I did feel that we were helping the local economy.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent...I would recommend you book before the planned runway extension is completed and the cruise terminal is finished!

Holiday Reviews

We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
