Bordeaux activity holiday in France

Small group adventure holiday
Typically you will be sharing your experiences with between 4-20 like minded travellers (depending on the trip, operator and how many others are booked on the trip) and you'll have a group leader with you. Whether you are travelling alone or with friends its good value, and a great way to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of privacy. This trip will appeal to travellers of all ages who enjoy meeting new people as well as seeing new places.

How this holiday makes a difference

Environment
Ours is a summer house, so we save energy by being closed during the autumn and winter months. The house is equipped with showers only and dual flush toilets, using recycled toilet paper. We change the sheets weekly when the new group arrives. All the laundry is done by the "Dry Cleaner" shop in the village, this lady has an industrial washing machine which is energy saving and more efficient than doing the equivalent of ten loads in my smaller machine. People are encoraged to wash their smalls by hand, usually it is kept to the minimum. We encorage travellers to save energy, turn off water when unecessary. We use eco washing up products.

We have recycling bins, usually some of us walk to the site ,generally people are very good and it's a good excuse to stop at the one and only cafe on the way back!

The group size is a maximum of ten people and we are strict on noise pollution. There are no T.V or radios in the house. Participants are required to use their mobiles outside, and to keep very quiet when walking back from local restaurant at night. I have reassured the mayor of the village that peace and quiet at nights will be respected. All through their stay the travellers spend a lot of their time in the unspoiled countryside. People are required not to litter, and if caught at it,they have to do the washing up, all in good humour! I ask them to refrain from picking wild flowers, once picked they wilt.

Community
Lavardac is a timeless village, although not far from the Dordogne, it is not yet on the tourist track, which is good for our visitors, but economically hard for the villagers. 3/4 of them live on state handouts. We are offering the local community, shops and restaurants more retail, bringing much needed new customers, not relying solely on people passing through on their way to the south. We support local growers, trying to buy mostly organically home grown produce, minimizing the food carbon foot print.

I employ a village person to help with the cooking and the cleaning. The house is maintained by local artisans.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The most memorable part of the holiday were the group and Jocelyn (hostess) & Bernard (art lessons). We all had such an amazing time together. Everyone was very chilled and went with the flow, from morning art classes, volley ball at the lake, a boat trip down the river and yummy meals with interesting conversation. An unforgettable experience.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Go with an open mind and a relaxed attitude. Everything else will just fall into place.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes, all the food was bought locally and we visited local stores, cafes and villages where we used facilities and purchased goods.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The holiday overall was truly brilliant. 10/10!!

The scenery was beautiful and it was a really interesting experience as I had never been away with a group of strangers before!

Make sure you are happy to give a little in terms of time and patience as you have to work around the group and cannot just do what you want to all the time.

We were eating local food and visited the local restaurant and hired a boat locally but apart from that I am not sure what else we could have done.

I had a lovely time and felt well provided for by the host. The location was very picturesque.
