Tanzania adventure holiday

Small group adventure holiday
Typically you will be sharing your experiences with between 4-20 like minded travellers (depending on the trip, operator and how many others are booked on the trip) and you'll have a group leader with you. Whether you are travelling alone or with friends its good value, and a great way to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of privacy. This trip will appeal to travellers of all ages who enjoy meeting new people as well as seeing new places.

How this holiday makes a difference

For every week that our passengers spend in Africa, we plant a tree in Kenya through the Woodlands 2000 Trust, a local NGO. The Woodlands 2000 Trust is a wonderful project that provides seeds and seedlings with planting materials as well as land-planning, tree survival and woodlot management services. It aims to increase reforestation and bio-diversify in semi-arid regions, and also to create sustainable and profitable tree products micro-industries that contribute to alleviating poverty.

We believe strongly in low impact tourism and so during this trip we use existing locally owned facilities. By using locally owned and run facilities we are helping the local communities that we visit. We reduce deforestation by avoiding unnecessary use of scarce firewood and using gas for cooking. At Mto Wa Mbu travellers have a chance to interact with the locals in the busy market and can contribute to the local community

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Spotting my own Leopard. Thanks to our top notch driver/guide who taught us how to look for wildlife instead of keeping the spotting activity to himself. When I first saw "something" up on a Kopji, I thought it was a lion. The driver guide didn't see anything and tried to convince me it was a "rock lion". Upon double-checking with the binoculars, I was able to inform him that he was correct - it wasn't a lion - but a leopard! Needless to say I got the spotting award for the day.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be very careful at the border crossing. We didn't meet our driver/guide until reaching Arusha, so were on our own and totally naïve as to how things "work" at the border. It is very easy to get separated from the other shuttle passengers by hawkers with various cons. We had several instances where they tried to keep people from getting back on the shuttle by telling them they were getting on the wrong vehicle.

Be sure to take multiple memory cards for your digital camera. 1 GB or more each is recommended. Also, take your camera battery charger and cable or other device for downloading pictures to a computer. I know this seems pretty much a no-brainer, but I met so many people who had only one 256 MB memory card and no way to offload pictures, and/or no battery charger.

If at all possible, put your money into a good point & shoot with a 12x zoom. Everyone will be amazed at the quality of your photos. I used a Canon S3IS. It also took great videos - even on the night drives.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Our safari group size was 2, so the large supply truck (overlander size), was probably more impact than warranted for our trip. However, the staff was very environmentally conscious - conserving water, not littering, etc. I assume that some of the campgrounds we used were owned by local people.

4. Any other comments?

This safari was wonderful and highly recommended. Definitely 5 stars.
