How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
The efforts of many of our tourism partners in Malawi on a local scale are helping to preserve the unique marine environment of Lake Malawi in the local areas of the lodge or camp.
Like any business we cannot eliminate our consumption of energy altogether, what we do instead is financially offset our carbon emissions by 110% through Climate Care. The nature of this trip which includes activities that are run on man-power e.g. sea kayaking, biking, trekking means that the impact is low once they arrive at the destination.
Community
Mvuu Camp, our accommodation in Liwonde, is an excellent example of conservation tourism as many 100s of local people benefit directly and indirectly from a range of employment, wildlife monitoring and environmental education initiatives including a large school funded by guests of the camp. Your visit to Liwonde helps to support a visionary initiative called “Children in the Wilderness” where for several weeks each year the camp is closed and local schoolchildren come to learn about wildlife, conservation and sustainable living.
Through our local partners, we also support the work of conservation organizations who are active in the Mount Mulanje region, where some of central Africa’s rare cedar forests are protected, providing a vital water catchment area for the communities below. Similarly, our sea kayaking route along some of the most wild and spectacular coastline of Lake Malawi National Park provides vital income to some remote community-based accommodations, further strengthening the ties between local people, ecotourism and nature conservation. All the guides are locally trained and based.
