How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

The company is committed to remaining small, restricting the number of people undertaking holidays, retreats and programmes at any one time, thereby allowing us to truly cater to individual need and preference, and to minimise any negative affect on the surrounding environment.

Community

We use a few hand picked small locally owned boutique hotels. These range from a secluded mountainside retreat villa resort to city centre “oasis” and all fall within our responsible and ethical travel policy. In fact, most go well beyond it giving substantial amounts of their incomes to local schools and Buddhist temples. Many of the hotel staff, managers and owners have become our good friends and treat all our guests with the kindness and thoughtfulness that has made Thailand such a special destination. One of our hotels popular as a base for our Womens Holiday is The Puripunn Baby Grand Boutique Hotel.

The Puripunn Hotel employs mainly Thai people, makes a major contribution to the appreciation of traditional art and culture, donates regularly to the local temple and offers work experience placements to young people hoping to work in the hotel industry. It is active in regeneration plans for the immediate locality and has recently sponsored upgrading a local museum within the grounds of the local Buddhist Temple.

We ask our clients to join us in achieving our aim of ensuring that our presence in Chiang Mai brings positive benefits to the area and its people. This will be achieved by: making regular donations to The Vieng Ping Childrens Home, a local charity providing residential and community care for children whose parents have either died or cannot look after them, maintaining an attitude of respect to people and the environment, at all times and using the services of local businesses, buying local products and visiting attractions which provide employment for and understanding of the local community.

Many local crafts people can benefit from visitors buying their work rather than mass produced souvenirs. One of our team members, Son, who will be your guide on your chosen outings, can advise you on what is available and where to find it. Chiang Mai also has a huge selection of locally owned small restaurants, cafes and street food stalls. You will miss a great opportunity to sample some of the most delicious and inexpensive food in the world if you don’t try as many of these as possible. We are very happy to recommend both special dishes and places to eat them.

Please bring, or be prepared to purchase, suitable clothes for visiting the many very special temples in Chiang Mai. Our staff will advise according to your chosen itinerary. A certain amount of bargaining is an accepted part of many transactions including market purchases and tuk-tuk rides. This can be fun if conducted with mutual respect and in the knowledge that the traders need to earn a living. The Thai Royal Family are revered and respected by the people of Thailand and anything said to undermine them is likely to cause offence. It is fascinating and informative to learn from local people, about the contributions made by King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit to Thai life and economy.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The whole holiday was extremely memorable. Working with Chrissy and Alex who run the Lifechange programme in Chiang Mai was the best gift that I have ever given myself. I had been 'hmming and ahhing' for a while about where to go for a well deserved break and I was also very anxious about travelling on my own. I discovered my holiday to Thailand through responsibletravel however still felt quite nervous about holidaying to a part of the world that was soo far away. Chrissy was extremely supportive and provided me with all the information that I needed to feel confident that I had made the right decision to fly to Thailand and do the Lifechange programme. I did go over my budget however every penny and BAHT spent was well worth it. Chiang Mai is beautiful, clean, has lots of fun things to do but even more importantly, as a female solo traveller it felt very safe. The Puripunn hotel that I stayed in exceeded my expectations, it was beautiful and the staff were very helpful, polite and kind. The hotel deserves and award!

I went to the Patara Elephant farm and owned an elephant for a day, words can not describe how fantastic this experience was. Being someone who has never spent much time with animals I was surprised to fine how involved I got with the elephants, I definitely hove a new found respect for them and the staff at the Patara Elephant Farm.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

If you are looking for an inspiring, fun holiday that is full of culture, Chiang Mai is the place to go. If you are looking for luxurious sanctuary with excellent service and without an uptight atmosphere, stay at the Puripunn Baby Grand Boutique. If you are sick of the doom and gloom that is so easily absorbed in your busy working life, visit the Patara Elephant Farm. And if you want a truly positive life changing holiday, that will help you gain clarity on life and seek your own happiness, definitely go on the Lifechange programme with Chrissy and Alex. If you are looking for a positive lifechanging ex.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

It is hard to say how local people benefited from my holiday however I'm sure that I helped their economy through tourism. I was respectful of the Thai culture and only ever dined at restaurants serving Thai food (No McDonalds/Burger King for me). I had several massages and paid several different local people for this service and I used local Thai transportation 'Tut tut' and cycles to get around which also provided business for the local people.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I wish I could have stayed for longer, 10 days was great but I could have easily done a week. No matter what age you are (I am 27), this holiday will have something special for you. I would particularly recommend it to solo travellers, couples and small groups. I have already recommended this holiday to family and friends. This is a truly amazing life changing/affirming experience.
