How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
The main emphasis on the trip is to safari on foot rather than by vehicle in order to hear the sounds, look at the sights and smell the smells of the African savannah without polluting the atmosphere with the noise of an engine and the smell of diesel fumes. We do make use of diesel safari vehicles for night drives and some transfers, but use of vehicles is kept to a minimum.
The group size is kept small (to a maximum of eight guests) which is perfect for a low-impact walking safari and to visit the school without causing disruption to the school children's day. The walking safaris make use of the trails carved by the local wildlife, and again this results in as low impact a safari as possible.
Community
On our Zambian safari we are making the very best use of Zambia's top naturalist guides and scouts, and staying in camps and lodges that have top Zambian management. South Luangwa National Park is one of the finest in Africa and all entrants to the park are paying significant fees for the upkeep of the park and management of its wildlife (these are included in the cost of the holiday).
Most of the food is sourced from the Mfuwe area by villagers producing meat and vegetables organically. The staff in the lodges are all from the local Mfuwe area and the team we work with in Luangwa lead the way in identifying good potential staff members and training them to a very high standard.
We also support one of the local schools in the Mfuwe area (Yosefe School) and ensure that all safari participants will have the opportunity to visit the school and see the excellent work that is being carried out there. Over the years we have raised funds to assist in the building of teachers' housing, a new classroom block and a library. Through the activities of clients and friends we have also provided many of the books that presently fill the library too.
