Family adventure holiday in Bulgaria

Family adventure holiday in Bulgaria

Small group family holiday
This is a 'small group family adventure' - typically you will join several other families and travel in a group of approx. 16 people. The trips are great value and a great way for you and your children to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of time to yourselves. Most adventure kids tend to be aged between 7 and 15, but some are younger (minimum age is usually 5) and some older (perhaps travelling as part of a larger family group). Please check with the operator to confirm the minimum age for this trip

How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

Our supplier groups follow a specific mountain code, taking care to take all garbage with them as they travel and to dispose of this appropriately at the end of the trip and we offer all our clients the opportunity to offset carbon emissions through Climate Care.

Since running our first trip, in 1984, KE has been committed to minimising environmental impact. We recognise the fragility of the world's wilderness environments, keep our groups small with this in mind and operate according to a Mountain Code, provided to all groups, trek leaders, agents and staff. We hold AITO's top (5-star) award for Sustainable Tourism, thanks to our implementation of sustainable office practice, our communication with customers, our environmental practice and practical within-destination activity. We are also previous holders of the prestigious AITO Achievement in Responsible Tourism Award, which acknowledged our proven ability to make positive contribution in many of the areas that we operate.

For 16 years we have channelled our aid work through the Juniper Trust charity and have achieved notable successes, building schools and water supply projects and raising funds for worthy projects and appeals in many parts of the world.

Community

Our supplier has been operating holidays in Bulgaria for the last 10 years, working with a Bulgarian mountain guide who is based in Sofia. Although a Balkan country, Bulgaria has not suffered so many of the troubles caused by disagreements over it’s borders, ethnicity and religion as have affected other Balkan states over the last 10 years although there have been problems for the country as it has struggled free from it’s former Eastern bloc status and many areas of the Black Sea coast have been irresponsibly developed.

This trip takes place in the lovely Rhodopi Mountains in the south of Bulgaria, close to the border with Greece. During the trip, the group stay at local family-run hotels and on occasion eat with the family members. Local guides are used in the Rhodopi Mountain for all the activities - horse riding, caving, and local staff are employed to set up the camp for the night spend in the Chairite Reserve. Most of the produce used for meals is locally-sourced, including potatoes and vegetables, and all is prepared in local hotels and restaurants. When lunch is taken in the local villages, we use only locally-owned places

The night spent camping at Chairite Lake is in a nature reserve, where all families will learn from the guide about the protected area, rare birds, plants and their protection.

Whilst trekking in the reserver, we stick with the marked trails so as not to further disturb the local wildlife or ecosystem. Some of the villages are multi-ethnic, with some people members of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and some Muslim. The guide will take care to provide the group with information on local traditions, lifestyle, customs and religion.
