How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
All of our trips are conducted strictly according to the ‘Leave No Trace’ ethics. A significant focus is being put on waste management, and driving only on marked roads, to protect the flora and fauna.
Our staff is regularly involved in the training of local authorities in the appropriate practices necessary to protect their environment, and creating a sustainable socio-economic balance, by creating alternative sources of income to prevent overgrazing, and more importantly, to eliminate illegal poaching.
Community
After more than 10 years of being involved in the Mongolian travel industry, we have established strong ties with various nomadic and semi-nomadic families, from whom we obtain services such as horse, camel and yak rental, guiding and basic accommodation and food provision. We then provide them with much needed income. With this kind of income, these families are able to continue their traditional lifestyle, and preserving their hundreds of years’ traditions that go back to the time of Chinggis Khan.
Over the years, we have realized that by facilitating cross-cultural dialogues, we are not only enriching the experience of our travellers, but also allowing our hosts, the Mongolian nomads, to understand more about what is going on around the globe. This allows them not only to understand their unique role of preserving their heritage, but also gives them a special pride in it.
This special trip will take you, the travellers, up to Lake Huvsgul, home to the rapidly declining Reindeer people. Due to significant socio-economic transitions in the Huvsgul region, many of the Reindeer people have abandoned their unique traditions and lifestyle, and are now tapping into the gold mining industry. Sadly enough, it is almost only thanks to the travel industry that a few of the members of this already small clan are preserving their ancient heritage. For each of the travellers visiting the Reindeer people, we are making a donation towards those families which have chosen to keep their old way of life, and hence, allowing them to resist the temptation of changing their unique lifestyle.
Because of our commitment to responsible travel, all guides on our trips are Mongolians. The guide is after all the person you will spend the most time with on your trip, and we believe it is important that your guide be a local person in order to give you the best possible sense of Mongolian culture, traditions, and customs, as well as first-hand knowledge about the environment, wildlife, economics, or whatever your interest may be. We invest a great deal into our guide training program in order to enable our team to function at a professional level that allows us to give staff opportunities for promotion, and our staff is paid well above national average wages.
