Family run, our private hotel works very closely with local companies. Some of the safari providers are independent one man business’s. They have a passion for their activities. They have grown up in the area and can pass on lots of historical and cultural facts. They have a great knowledge of their surroundings and nature, which they enjoy to passing onto their clients during the activities so as they get the best out of the experience.
Many local associations also play a part in the tourism of Kuhmo, e.g. once a week, during winter, a local Folklore group visits the hotel playing, singing and dancing together with our guests. This Helka society consists of small children who sing and dance traditional Finnish songs. Also our guests and especially on this trip children may join these dances.
Our partners (transportation, food, activity companies, etc.) are also from the region. We buy and use as much home produce as possible, e.g. berries, mushrooms, fish. Our rye bread has been created together with the nearby bakery. Also we believe this same philosophy when considering food for children. They will also get a similar 4 course dinner consisting local ingredients, but we do give families also choices. Decorations such as flowers, cones, lychen, stones and bark all come from the surrounding nature.
On this trip we work together with 3 small local safari companies who all work here year around making different activities. During the cross country ski lesson we use the same ski-centre where also local children practise skiing. We have a variety of skies, shoes and poles at the hotel our guests to use, if we can´t find a right pair for each customer, our good partner, local ski-association will help us and our guests.
Our safari routes follow the land maintained by the Forest and Park Service of Finland. For each tour we pay funds for them which they use for maintaining the area and the fireplaces, open huts and other services in the area which local people are using also. By these fireplaces our guests usually meet the locals as well. During the snowshoe walk our guide leads the group on a certain route to see also the old tar-burning pit; an old tradition will be explained during the activity.
Also we have left 2 free days for families to visit local museums (Winter War museum, Nature Centre, Cultural centre) or spend time with each other. We believe a big part of the holiday is also relaxing and spending precious time together. At the hotel we have a small souvenir shop including also handmade things from the locals (woollen socks, drawings, wooden articles etc.).

We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
