Responsible tourism: Activity holiday in Spain and Portugal

Environment

We are located at the south west of Spain, where the 30% of the area is a protected area. We visit the Natural and National parks that surround us making interpretation of the whole wildlife. Our activities are Sailing, trekking and going by bike, because the sustainable moving is our bet.

We advise to the people who come to Isla Cristina to buy at the local market where they can find local products as fruit grown in the surroundings and fresh fish. We also advise to eat those products at the local restaurants. In that way the energetic cost of the products is lower.

We strive to re-cycle as much as we can from all our household and office waste. Glass, paper, cardboard and plastic are separated, and taken to our local town containers. Inkjet cartridges from printers, batteries are also saved for safe disposal. We are also aware of saving electricity and water and when we need to purchase new electrical appliances we consider the ecological implications. Wherever possible we buy bio-diesel fuel for our vehicles.

Community

Eco tourism is something we work to maintain at the highest levels we can. It means quite simply, responsible travel to natural areas while conserving the environment and sustaining the well-being of local people. Our trips are specially aimed at responsible clients who wish to participate in environmentally friendly, low-impact nature tourism.

Our staff is local and very well trained, they are people who live at the areas where we are visiting so the knowledge of the area is wide and deep. We visit local places to eat where it’s possible to taste the real flavour of the deep Spain and Portugal, as the freshest fish and acorn feed Iberian pigs.

During this trip we will show and taste the typical things of the places that we will visit: We are going to walk into the hills of Aracena, where we can talk with people from the little villages as Castano del Robledo and we can taste the produce that are made at the area (Iberian pig products, cork and chestnut products)

We will visit El Rocío village where there is Organic livestock as cows and horses which live in the marshes of Doñana during the whole year. While kayaking we will be inside a natural reserve where thousands of birds come in spring to breed and in during the fall others come from the north to pass the winter The day of the bikes we visit and also support a local business, one of the last artisanal salt plants that remain in Spain where is possible to collect the salt with the workers sometimes. The economic impact of the group is big, because we visit little local restaurants and shops at far from the common routes.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Sailing the Atlantic off the Algarve

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Check the boat and number of passengers in advance. Don't pack too much stuff.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

No. Because of the overcrowded boat with only one working head (loo), all the sewage went right over the side instead of into holding tanks.

I suppose local people benefited when we ate in their restaurants.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Mixed. The activity part was pretty well done with accommodation for those of us needing a slower pace, or a ride back. Non-Spanish speakers were only partially informed.

There were serious issues with the week on the boat. The boat was nothing like what was advertised (4 cabin catamaran with 4 heads per description; in reality, 4 cabin monohull with much smaller space and only one working head). Not everyone could fit around either table at the same time.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Each activity was memorable in its own right. The guides, Sergio and Monica, were second to none and nothing was too much trouble for them. They really seem to enjoy their job and are both extremely knowledgable.
Nothing was rushed, everything was well organised and ran at a relaxed pace. My 12 year old son didn't have time to be bored :)

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

It does get colder than I expected at night, so definitely take something warm for the evening.I was not aware that we had to share an apartment with the other people on the tour, and to be honest, had I known, I would have reconsidered my holiday choice. If there is a big group of you travelling together, then this is ideal, but personally, I was not happy that my son and I had to share a 3 bedroom apartment with strangers.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Overall an excellent holiday.(Apart from the accommodation)
Very well organised and very informative and educational. As a single mum looking for activity and adventure for my 12 year old son, it was the perfect choice.
