Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Luxury fitness holidays in Spain

Environment

Our accommodation is a purpose built hotel complex, it was constructed using the principles of Feng Shui, it has its own modern sewage treatment plant which supplies all the water to the gardens. The units are very well insulated so that energy consumption can be kept to a minimum, heat in winter and cool in summer. The complex employs an "intelligent" building system, iHAS, this turns lights off automatically and regulates interior and exterior lights according to the level of darkness again reducing power consumption.

The food served to our clients is, in-season, locally sourced and produced, unrefined, unprocessed and wherever possible organic, this means we can minimise packaging and support local growers and producers whilst ensuring our clients enjoy the very freshest produce possible.

In this region of Spain everyone recycles their waste, both individual households and business, glass, metal, plastic, paper and organic and garden waste.

All guests are informed and encouraged to be environmentally aware both inside and outside the complex, inside by conserving power and water and outside by understanding why it is so important to stay on the designated tracks when hiking or mountain biking, we limit our groups to a maximum of 12 people, not only does this ensure our clients receive individual attention but also less impact is made to the environment.

Community

The accommodation / Hotel complex we use employs local staff. All of our drivers, housekeepers, cook’s and therapists are local, , and we use local guides for both hiking and mountain biking, this not only offers employment to local people but also means that our clients benefit from genuine local knowledge that cannot be found in a guide book.

The owners of the Hotel use local suppliers and use goods and services from the local areas, this is particularly important during the autumn and winter months on the coastal areas as when the summer tourists have left the unemployment rates soar.

All of the unused natural products supplied in our guest welcome bags is gifted to a local children's home & charity.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

So many amazing moments, Circuits and the High Intensity work-outs on the beach have to be a highlight, along with the serene Yoga sessions first thing in the morning. My massage was the best I have ever had. accommodation was first class and the food to die for.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Pack loads of fitness gear- the appartments do have washing machines so take washing tablets.
Go with an open mind and try all the activities.
Treat yourself to a massage or some of the lovely treatments on offer

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Definately, local people were employed at the centre. Very eco-friendly accommodation but not to the detriment of producing a quality appartment.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Absolutely brilliant

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Luxury and detox can be combined in the same sentence. From arrival to departure, accommodation, exercise classes and food were all wonderful. Made some wonderful new friends who I will keep in contact with.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Stop drinking coffee a few days before arrival to avoid caffeine withdrawal problems. The retreat is very relaxed so no need to pack any dressy clothes.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The food provided was locally sourced and organic benefitting local suppliers. All staff were locally based.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The holiday was excellent from start to finish - so much so that I am considering returning later in the year.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Being able to relax!

I had no idea what to expect and met up with a group of 30 - 55 year olds in need of time to relax and unwind. 14 burned out ladies! Gentle yoga, cardio circuits, walks, good food etc contributed to re-energise us. Good massages.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

To benefit fully you need to be moderately fit.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Not really unless you count local expats as locals ...

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Good - wish I hadn't been in need to cut myself off to be able to relax but needs must. I left feeling and looking far better than 6 days earlier. No competition, free to participate or not, no pressure to push yourself too much.
